TOP STORY - 2015 Election: Why President Jonathan will not declare now

PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN

Speculations that President Goodluck Jonathan would declare his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election any moment from now appears to have hit the rocks following revelations that the president is not in an hurry to announce his ambition.

Media reports had linked Jonathan to a plot to announce his ambition immediately after the ongoing unity rallies across the zones. Some sources had also indicated that the president would announce his candidacy in the 2015 race before the forthcoming Democracy Day on May 29. It was, however, confirmed that the president has decided to shelve the idea of announcing his candidacy for the next general election until the ongoing National Conference is concluded.

Sources in the administration confirmed that the president does not want anything that would disrupt the National Conference as well as shift attention from governance. It was also confirmed that the president believes that total politicking would immediately start as soon as he inaugurates the 2015 campaign. It was learnt that the president holds the ongoing National Conference dearly and would not do anything to derail it.

“Those who have been speculating that the president was set to announce as seeking re-election in the forthcoming 2015 election are missing the point. They also do not read political trends. There is no way Mr President would announce himself as seeking re-election when the National Conference is ongoing. “There is also no way the president would announce his candidacy so early in the race when there is a lot of governance to be done.

“Immediately he announced his plan for re-election, that would almost put an end to governance and Mr President knows this.He wants to continue to deliver on the dividends of democracy to the people knowing that Nigerians had suffered in the hands of non-performing governments in the past,” a source said.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
