The train of defection rocking major parties in the country stopped over in Delta State over the weekend as Chief Ede Dafinone defected from the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) to the leading opposition party, APC, in the state.

Chief Dafinone, who was DPP’s senatorial candidate in the last October’s Delta Central Senatorial District by-election to fill the vacuum created by the demise of the late Chief Pius Ewherido, defected with scores of his supporters at a ceremony held at Sapele Athletic Club, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

The son of Owere of Okpe Kingdom, Chief Senator D.O.D. Dafinone, who represented the Urhobo in the defunct Bendel State at the National Assembly, while addressing a crowd of APC supporters, said having identified APC as a proper vehicle in Nigeria and a strong opposition at both  state and federal levels, he had no option but to pitch his tent with the opposition party. Chief Dafinone, whose exit has further worsened the woes of DDP in the state, advised his new party members to fully participate at their congresses due to commence soon. He said APC was a unified, creditable party and not only an opposition, but a party that could win elections.

He explained that the event of the day was that of “Delta Progressive Change Forum (DPCF),” a pressure group within APC which he is equally identifying with for the first time. Dafinone, popularly called Urhobo Obama, noted that if all politicians of like minds worked with one pressure group as against the multiple pressure groups formed by politicians, it was then they could have a stronger party. He appealed for a common front among politicians towards taking over power from the PDP in the 2015 election.

According to him, all APC members should put aside the issues of factions and participate in the congress to build a stronger party and to also put aside selfish and personal shot-term interest to build a credible party in the APC.

Meanwhile, Chairman of DPP in Delta State, Chief Tony Ezeagu, while speaking with Sunday Tribune on phone, said Dafinone was in PDP before he defected to DPP and now to APC, saying this had always been his trait.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
