Man, 35, electrocuted in Asaba

There was pandemonium on Wednesday night in Asaba, the Delta State capital, following the electrocution of a 35-year-old man, Bright Ekene Abunwaeze. It was learnt that Abunwaeze worked with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC). An eyewitness, who spoke in confidence, told our reporter how Abunwaeze died.

He said: “We saw three BEDC (PHCN) workers when they came with a Hilux van at 8pm and started climbing the electricity poles that night. So, we wondered why they were working at that time. Few minutes after, we saw a spark at the top of the pole where the man was working. Suddenly, the man was electrocuted, hanging on top of the pole.

“He later fell down, his hands burnt. Smoke was coming out of his nostrils and ears. Then, his head burst.”
It was learnt that Abunwaeze was attempting to fix a faulty 450 KVA high tension wire on Nnebisi Road’s Service Unit in Asaba when he was electrocuted. His colleagues at the scene ran away when the man was electrocuted.

BEDC’s Asaba Business District’s spokesman Mrs Esther Okolie said Abunwaeze’s death was regrettable because he was among the company’s best workers.Mrs Okolie said investigation had started on the incident. She said the control room had confirmed that the line was dead before the deceased climbed the pole for the repairs. A relative of the deceased, Mr Sam Anukwu, regretted the incident.

He said the late Abunwaeze’s father died six years ago on official duty in the same company.
Anukwu said the deceased would have been married last December but shifted his wedding to tomorrow, the Lovers’ Day.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
