SUNDAY PERISCOPE: The Imperative of Reforming Our Value System and Ethical Commitment for Progress

In the pursuit of progress, a critical imperative emerges: the reform of our value system and the reinforcement of our commitment to robust ethics. To advance as a society, we must reassess the fundamental principles guiding our actions and hold accountable those entrusted with governance and stewardship of resources. At the heart of societal advancement lies a reevaluation of our collective values. Our value system shapes our behaviors, decisions, and priorities, influencing the trajectory of progress. Therefore, it is imperative to scrutinize and, if necessary, recalibrate these values to align with the demands of a rapidly evolving world. By fostering values such as integrity, empathy, and accountability, we lay the groundwork for a more equitable and sustainable society. Central to this reformation is the cultivation of strong ethical standards. Ethics serve as the guiding principles that govern our conduct, ensuring fairness, transparency, and justice in our interactions. However,...

OKUAMA: A Tale of Humiliation in Victory

The release of the king of Ewu kingdom, ostensibly a moment of triumph, instead cast a shadow of humiliation over the people, revealing deep-seated power dynamics and a lack of respect for traditional authority. Upon his release, the Eghwu monarch found himself subjected to conditions reminiscent of a common criminal, forced to comply with absurd stipulations that demeaned his royal status. He was released on the condition that he would be available to answer questions whenever demanded. This treatment, akin to stripping him of his sovereignty, raised questions about the military's accountability and the monarch's culpability in matters beyond his control. The indignities did not end there. Even the Executive Governor, entrusted with the welfare of his state, was reduced to a pawn in the military's game, constrained in his movements and restricted in his expressions. His visit to the ravaged community of Okuama was orchestrated under military supervision, his actions and wo...

OROGUN CULTURAL DAY: The Vibrant Celebration of Cultural Heritage

Orogun Kingdom, nestled in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, pulsated with energy as its sons and daughters congregated for the annual celebration of their cultural heritage. This commemoration, known as the Orogun Cultural Day, serves as a testament to the rich tapestry of traditions that define the essence of Orogun identity. The festivities, steeped in age-old customs, rituals, and communal bonds, offer a glimpse into the collective spirit of the Orogun people. From dawn till dusk, the air resonates with the cadence of drums, the rhythmic sway of dancers, and the melodic strains of indigenous music, echoing the heartbeat of the community. Central to the cultural day is the veneration of Erose Efe, a deity revered for its legendary role in safeguarding Efe, the father of Orogun and his progeny during times of adversity. This homage pays homage to the spiritual roots that anchor the Orogun people amidst the ebb and flow of history. A hallmark of the cele...

SHERIFF'S VISIT TO OKUAMA: Another Shame OF A Local Champion Governor - By Zik Gbemre

Wetin Gov Sheriff Oborevwori go to do for Okuama? To mock the distressed Okuama people or what? A shameless governor. That is what he is since Sheriff can't condemn the unlawful military destruction of Okuama over a tragic questionable peace mission to the community. "Okuama don turn to tourist centre"? Gov Oborevwori didn't condemn the wiping out of Okuama Town in Ughelli South LGA by military for their rascality against the poor locals of the community who no longer have any shelter to live in. These are Okuama people that were killed, maimed and the entire community turned to rumble. I ask again Sheriff, "wetin you go do for Okuama without condemning the illegal destruction of Okuama town"? Are you the elected governor of Delta or a rubber stamp governor of Delta? I am not amused with your visit to Okuama. I don't think Sheriff understands his role as a governor. Uptill now, Sheriff has not asked the required questions. "Wetin Soldiers wen dey gu...

GOVERNOR OBOREVWORI FINALLY STEPS FOOT IN OKUAMA, The Destruction of The Community Remains Unaddressed.

Exactly a month and six days after 17 military personnel were gruesomely murdered around Okuama community, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori finally stepped foot in Okuama, yet silence echoes louder than words as the killing of innocent citizens and community's destruction remained unaddressed. Accompanied by top government functionaries, including some members of the State House of Assembly, Governor Oborevwori led the tour of the troubled riverine town, accompanied by the Commander of the 63 Brigade, Brig. Gen. Unachukwu Ugochukwu, and the Commander of 181 Battalion, Lt Col Dabo. However, during the tour, the governor failed to condemn the killing of innocent citizens and the extensive destruction of villagers' buildings and other properties resulting from the ugly incident. Recall that on March 14, 2024, 17 military personnel, including a lieutenant colonel, two majors, and a captain, were brutally killed by unknown gunmen around the community. The slain officers and soldiers were...

ADDRESSING THE RELEASE OF THE KING of EWU KINGDOM FROM MILITARY DETENTION

The release of Ovie Clement Ikolo, the King of Ewu kingdom from military detention serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized communities and the importance of effective leadership in addressing their grievances. The release of the King has sparked various sentiments within the State. This event has exposed the apparent lack of capacity for engagement and concern for pressing governance issues by the governor and the state government. At the critical moment of the release, the governor was preoccupied with other matters, exemplified by his attendance at Cairo's funeral in Agbor. The conspicuous absence of either the governor or state representatives during the release of His Royal Majesty further underscored their detachment from the situation. The timely action taken by the three Senators in securing the release of the Ewu King highlights the potential impact of effective leadership. Their intervention prevented the prolonged confinement of the king, dem...

THE DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT'S POSITION ON THE OKUAMA COMMUNITY CRISIS: Legal Implications and Concerns

The recent crisis in Okuama Community has prompted the Delta State Government to submit a position paper to the Military Tribunal established by the Defence Headquarters. However, questions arise regarding the legality and fairness of this action, particularly concerning the involvement of the military in adjudicating civil matters and the principles of natural justice. Firstly, it's crucial to address whether the Delta State Commissioner for Justice, who signed the position paper, is indeed a lawyer. Assuming he is, there remains a pertinent question about his awareness of the legal principles involved. The cornerstone of any legal system is the rule of law, which includes the fundamental principle of natural justice. This principle dictates that no one should be a judge in their own case. The military's involvement in adjudicating civil matters raises serious concerns about the impartiality and fairness of the process. As noted by several Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), ...

CELEBRATING LEADERSHIP AND UNITY: Ovuozorie Macaulay and the Isoko Nation Host Obarisi Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to a Triumphant Reception

In the wake of the State homecoming reception in Ughelli for the immediate past Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Obarisi Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the Isoko nation, spearheaded by the indefatigable Comrade Ovuozorie Macaulay, orchestrated a separate but equally triumphant celebration in honour of his distinguished representation at the national assembly. Despite its impromptu nature and the absence of extensive publicity, the event radiated with joy and festivity, with various dance troupes from both the Isoko and Ndokwa nations converging to mark the occasion. However, what truly distinguished this separate reception organized by the Isoko nation, spearheaded by Comrade Ovuozorie Macaulay is that this initiative underscored the deep-rooted sense of solidarity and camaraderie within the Isoko community, as they came together to honour a brother. Despite Senator Omo-Agege not directly representing their constituency, the Isoko people recognized and appreciated his contributions to...

OKUAMA & OBA OF BENIN BUSYBODY - By Zik Gbemre

Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II's one sided comments on Okuama kilings when 4 Brigade Commander, Brig-General Ebenezer Oduyebo, visited Oba Palace in Edo state, was to say the least disappointing. Nobody is happy about the murder of Nigerian soldiers under any circumstance, but the Oba, as father to a kingdom, should know and rightly acknowledge that there is equally no corresponding justification for vengeful invasion for indiscriminate killing of Okuama people and leveling of every structure on sight in the community.  Oba of Benin should have condemned the humiliation of the Ovie of Ewu Kingdom, a fellow monarch like him who has been declared wanted, arrested and languishing in Defence Headquarters in Abuja. The Oba of Benin should have condemned the slaughtering of police officers by suspected herdsmen in Agadama and Ohoror bush of Ughelli North LGA in same Delta state where the soldiers were killed. Are the Okuama locals and the police officers not human beings? No Nigerian is wor...

In the annals of political history, the axiom that "a prophet is not honored in his hometown" often rings true. However, the homecoming of Obarisi, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR, the former Deputy President of the Senate, to Ughelli in Delta State, defied this notion with resounding acclaim and jubilation. Despite the short notice of his arrival, the entire state, particularly the Delta Central Senatorial District, reverberated with the rhythmic beats of drums, heralding the return of one of its illustrious sons. This historic event, reminiscent of a triumphant entry, marked Omo-Agege's first homecoming since the last election, underscoring its significance. Children on holiday reveled in the spectacle of assorted cars and distinguished guests, while local traders seized the opportunity to capitalize on the influx...

NPA HELPLESS AS WARRI TOUTS KILL DELTA PORTS WITH ILLEGAL, NON-RECEIPTED FEE COLLECTIONS AT PORT GATES

There are indications that the unease of doing business at the Warri Ports in Delta State has taken a new dimension for the worse, further driving away stakeholders from patronising the port, even as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reneged on its promises of bringing a new lease of life to the port. Investigations revealed that touts around the port have taken over the port gates at Warri Port, collecting illegal fee which is non-receipted from every truck that is exiting the port. It's was gathered that recently, the fee suddenly increased to N4,000, thereby causing chaos and pains for importers at the port. According to a reliable source (names withheld) who is a senior official of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), the NPA gives so much emphasis to the communities around the port, and they have since taken over the port gates. How can these touts take over the port gate even to the Knowledge of NPA? They usually collect money from trucks leaving the port gates,...

BASSIROU DIOMAYE FAYE: Navigating the Pitfalls of Premature Euphoria in Leadership

In the wake of the inauguration of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a wave of euphoria has swept across the continent. However, amidst the jubilation, it is imperative to exercise caution and temper our expectations. The fervent celebration surrounding Faye's ascent to power belies the sobering reality that he is an untested leader, lacking in experience in governance at both national and local levels. Indeed, the essence of effective leadership transcends superficial qualities such as age, gender, or eloquence. While Faye may possess certain commendable attributes, including his youthfulness and rhetorical skills, these alone are insufficient indicators of his capability to govern. History is replete with examples of leaders who initially inspired hope and optimism but ultimately succumbed to the corrupting influence of power. From Gadhafi to Idi Amin, the trajectory of such leaders serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the inherent risks associated with unchecke...

UNVEILING TRUTH: Lessons from Delta State Governance in Times of Crisis

In the tapestry of human interactions, there exists an undeniable truth: individuals, no matter how adept they are at wearing masks, ultimately reveal their authentic selves. Time and space serve as the canvas upon which these revelations unfold. In the realm of governance, particularly amidst crisis, this phenomenon often manifests with striking clarity. As the Okuama crisis unfolded in Delta State, the incumbent governor found himself not only facing external challenges but also undergoing a profound process of self-revelation. In the crucible of crisis, leadership is tested, and the true essence of individuals is laid bare for all to see. The governor's response to the Okuama crisis became a litmus test, not only for his administrative capabilities but also for his character and integrity. In moments of turmoil, when decisive action is imperative, true leadership shines through. Conversely, hesitation or inadequacy in addressing the challenges at hand exposes the weaknesses of l...
