In a bold reflection of Nigeria’s rising global profile, and a signal of growing political influence within, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu touched down in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Friday for the 17th BRICS Summit, accompanied by a distinguished delegation that included the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
The presidential aircraft, which departed from Saint Lucia, landed at Rio International Airport at approximately 8:45 PM local time. The President was received by Carlos Sergio Sobral Duarte, Brazil’s Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, along with senior Nigerian officials and diplomatic aides. Notably present was Governor Oborevwori, whose inclusion underscores his emerging stature in national and international affairs, following his recent move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
His presence in the presidential delegation is a powerful testament to Delta State’s evolving influence on the national stage. It also affirms Governor Oborevwori’s growing political capital, particularly as Nigeria navigates new diplomatic alignments and trade engagements within the BRICS framework.
President Tinubu is one of only four African leaders invited to this year’s BRICS Summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Nigeria’s designation as a “partner country”, a rank above that of a guest nation—indicates the country’s expanding strategic relevance to the bloc, which now includes full African members like South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the summit is centered on enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, and development among major emerging economies. The timing is especially critical, given growing global economic uncertainties and potential new tariff policies from the United States under former President Donald Trump’s resurgent influence.
As the BRICS nations explore alternatives to Western-dominated financial and trade systems, Nigeria’s engagement signals a pivot toward broader economic partnerships. Governor Oborevwori’s participation not only amplifies the voice of subnational actors like Delta State in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy outlook but also signals a more integrated and forward-looking governance approach.
With his appearance on this international platform, Governor Oborevwori continues to build momentum as a key figure in Nigeria’s political and diplomatic evolution, bringing the Delta story to the world.
