ASABA: Indications emerged Wednesday that the General Officer Commanding the newly established 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Borno State, Major General Ahmadu Mohammed, witnessed sporadic shooting by soldiers protesting the killing of about 7 of their colleagues in an ambush by Boko Haram gunmen while returning from an operation.
The GOC, who visited the Maimalari Barrack in the Bornu State capital, where some of the soldiers allegedly killed were mobilized from to calm frayed nerves, however, he was said to have been welcomed with sporadic shootings by soldiers who blamed him for the death of their colleagues.
The shooting of the GOC could not be officially confirmed from spokesman of the 7 Division, Col. Mohammed Dole, when filing this report, the soldiers were said to have started firing into the air in protest over what they described as wrong order of the Commander, which they claimed led to the death of their colleagues.
Local sources say that the slayed soldiers who were part of an elite team on a counter insurgency operation had planned to spend the night at a village on Tuesday but were allegedly ordered by the army leadership in the division to proceed to Maiduguri in the night on a dangerous route. They were however said to have been ambushed by Boko Haram gunmen who killed over 7 of them in the course of obeying the new order.
Local sources said that the slain soldiers who were part of an elite team on a counter-insurgency operation had planned to spend the night at a village on Tuesday but were allegedly ordered by the army leadership in the division to proceed to Maiduguri in the night. They were however said to have been ambushed by Boko Haram gunmen who killed over 10 of them in the course of executing the new order.
