Mother of a nine-year old victim of rape has said that the 14 years prison sentence slammed on the convicted rapist by a high court in Delta State fell short of her expectation.  She also accused the authorities of the school where the act was committed of utter insensitivity.

The High Court sitting at Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State had on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 sentenced the accused and a teacher, Mr Godwin Onoyiwai, to 14 years in prison for raping the nine years old pupil about six years ago.

It was learnt that Onoyiwai had canal knowledge of  the pupil (names withheld) by forcing the helpless girl unto the floor of the staff room of Delta Career College Effurun, near Warri.

The unlawful act was said to have been committed by the teacher on September 23, 2008 at Delta Career College Effurun.

The presiding judge at Effurun High Court 1, Justice Kujaobola Onadike, said that the court had overwhelming evidence before it against the accused to pass the guilty verdict and accordingly pronounced the 14-year sentence.

Subsequently, the accused was led away in handcuffs to Warri Prison, Okere, Warri by the security personnel to commence his jail term.

However, the mother of the victim, Mrs Grace Jehovah, expressed appreciation that justice had finally come the way of the daughter via the court verdict but said that she had hoped the   accused would get a harsher penalty.  Mrs Jehovah told newsmen that she had actually expected that the wayward teacher would bag a life sentence.

The woman, who alleged attempt to intimidate her by authorities of the school and employers of the accused said, "I'm satisfied, but I was expecting life imprisonment for him. Well, I take it the way it is now."

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
