Fifteen students sponsored by the Delta State Government for a training in Footwear Design and Technology yesterday graduated from the prestigious Moda Pelle Academy, Milano, Italy after two weeks of intensive training.
The state had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) for the building and equipping of a leatherworks factory in Delta State. Under the terms of the agreement, UNIDO will apart from part funding the factory also help the state develop skills in shoe design to a level that will enable them compete with the best in the world.
On hand for the graduation ceremony yesterday were the Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Charles Ajuyah, SAN; Chike C. Ogeah Esq, Commissioner for Information and Dr. Antonia Ashiedu, Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation.
The training and setting up of a leather works factory is part of Project Cooperation Agreements between the Delta State Government and UNIDO under which agro processing capacities will be developed in the state.
The project aims at improving the quality of life of rural population of Delta State by setting up efficient farmer-owned small scale agro processing units for palm oil milling and fish drying linking them effectively with primary producers and domestic buyers.
The agreement also seeks to build creative industries for women in rural Delta, especially the traditional Akwaocha fabric to provide technical support for the development of the local fabric.
Speaking on the development, Ogeah said it is the next level in the consolidation of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan’s action plan of building enduring institutional frameworks for the development of requisite skills to boost human capacity, create jobs and boost production and export of quality non-oil products. “That is the essence f the Delta Beyond Oil” vision of the governor of Delta State,” Ogeah stated.
A statement issued by Pius Mordi, Special Assistant to Delta Information Commissioner further hinted that the Delta State delegation to Italy, later had a guided tour of the Giorgio Armani footwear factory by Moda Pelle Academy, with exploratory talks held on infusing the Armani fashion line with indigenous fabrics such as Akwaocha.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...

THE ENDURING LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP: Chief James Ibori Celebrated for His Impact on Delta State

On Friday, May 31st, during the funeral service for the Late Asagba of Asaba, the essence of true leadership was vividly displayed. The service featured the introduction of various dignitaries, including Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation who represented President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor Godwin Obaseki, and Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. As each dignitary was introduced, the church remained silent. However, the atmosphere dramatically changed when the name of Former Governor James Ibori was announced; the congregation erupted in wide jubilation and applause. This reaction was so profound that even Senator George Akume and Governor Obaseki could not hide their astonishment. The enthusiastic reception for Chief James Ibori during this solemn occasion highlighted his enduring legacy among the people of Delta State. Despite having left office seventeen years ago, he continues to be celebrated whenever he attends public functions i...
