THE MONARCHIZATION OF DEMOCRACY

A vibrant civil society can challenge those in power by documenting corruption or uncovering activities that are anti-democratic. In democracies, this function is mostly performed by the media, NGOs and opposition parties.

Without a vibrant civil society, democracies could easily degenerate into despotisms. Yes, I am wondering about the whole paternal autocratic thing that we have around us. We do not want emperors. We do not want a rule over conquered people. People should not be afraid of their government, rather Government should be afraid of their people.

Democracy provides accountability of power that monarchy cannot provide. Through democracy we want to live for each other’s happiness, not for each other’s misery. But what we have is the monarchization of regimes with strong executive arms.
The way people in democracies think of government as something different from themselves is a real handicap. And, of course, sometimes the government confirms their opinion. Collective thinking of the people is usually short-lived. We are fickle, stupid beings with poor memories and a great gift for self-destruction. That is why we easily yield our rights and privileges. Democracy cannot grow, because we over worship positions of authority.
