Who knows?
Since last week
when Ibrahim Shekarau was appointed as the new minister of education, Wike has
been silent. In fact, even Aso Rock has been silent about Wike’s position. Repeated
inquiries to presidential spokesman for clarification on the issue were not
responded to. Over the weekend, fresh
speculations about Wike’s fate surfaced in the media.
There were
reports that Wike had resigned from the federal cabinet so as to give his time
to concentrate on his alleged Rivers governorship bid. The minister has for
over a year now been involved in a severe battle with the state governor,
Rotimi Amaechi.
There was yet
another speculation about Wike that he decided to resign having failed to
earn the confidence of President Goodluck Jonathan to be confirmed as Minister
of Education after serving as supervising minister of the ministry for almost
one year. To add salt to injury, polytechnic lecturers yesterday called off
their strike action after 10 months at home. This happened less than a week
after Shekarau became minister, whereas Wike had been unable to resolve the
crisis in ten months.
It was also
gathered that the Presidency had come to the conclusion that Wike’s political
value even in Rivers State was exaggerated and could not be
trusted to fly the PDP party in next year’s governorship election.
The Presidency is
now said to be considering Senator George Thompson Sekibo as the party’s
governorship candidate in the state.
Wike, according
to sources in Port Harcourt, is weighing the option of realizing his
ambition on the platform of another party, possibly the All Progressives Grand
Alliance (APGA).
