Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege has prescribed good governance as the panacea to the clamour for zoning in Nigerian politics. Noting that the concept of zoning is antithetical to the basic tenets of democracy. The Peoples' Democratic Party, Delta State Governorship aspirant stated this in Asaba today, while on his consultation visit to the Oshimili South Local Government Chapter of the party.
He declared that if the people in the different geopolitical and ethnic groups could feel the presence of government in their communities, the agitation for a particular zone or ethnicity to lead will not arise. He therefore averred that emphasis should be on the quality of the candidate and not zone.
The Lawyer who is also a son of retired Justice James Omo-Agege, former Chief Judge of Delta State, also proposed a participatory system of governance which he intends to run when voted in. He explained that the needs of the people are unique, it will be fruitful to get representatives of the people into the state executive in a bid to properly and evenly address these needs.
While lauding Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan's unrivalled developmental strides especially the Delta Beyond Oil initiative and the Delta Micro-Credit Programme powered through Dr Anthonia Ashiedu, Chief Ovie Omo-Agege promised to carry on from there and improve on what has been achieved so far. According to him, Dr Uduaghan's three point agenda of Human Capital Development, Infrastural Development and Peace and Security have been effective.
The Governorship Aspirant highlighted his key points of focus for successful governance when elected as Unemployment and Insecurity. Speaking with passion, he explained that these two factors are entwined, militating against any meaningful development any state or country can think of.
To tackle these two factors, Chief Omo-Agege promised to revitalize some dead or ailing companies in the state through refundable government grants. When these companies stand, they can employ Deltans and take the youth off the street, largely solving the problem of insecurity and unemployment in the same vein. He also intends to set up training for unemployed youth towards gathering intelligence for security in the state.
These people will be paid while they do their jobs without arms and ammunition which are for security officers only. "This way, the place will be safe and investors will be encouraged to come in, generate jobs for our people and generate revenue for the state".
Revealing his ambition as one way of giving back to Delta State what he owes her as a Deltan, he urged leaders to shun sentiments at all times while carrying out their duties conscientiously.
