DELTA 2015: URHOBO IN THE CURRENT POLITICAL EQUATION

After the successful conclusion of the PDP primaries, everyone is back to their tents to re-strategize. The unit that needs that strategization most is Delta Central Senatorial District. At this point it is crucial that political leaders within the zone bring up a realistic way forward. The all-important point to note is that there is no ethnic group that can go it alone. The earlier the Urhobo ethnic group realizes this, the better for everyone.

The victory of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa carries with it a mass appeal, which should not be lost in the thinking of political leaders within Delta Central. It will be most rational to key into this victory, so that jointly with Dr. Okowa a State is built that is all-inclusive. It is essential therefore that the UPU is not deceived into another futile jamboree that will make Urhobo politically irrelevant after 2015.

Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa will win the general election, no doubt about that. There are millions of Delta people who will vote for him. With a very transparent primary, the victory of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has polarized the ranks of the Urhobos and there is no way the Urhobos can attack or oppose him in unison. The whole thing will now boil down to 'interest'. Period!  It is therefore clear that he will win a sizeable number of the votes from Delta Central Senatorial District even if the elections were conducted today.

Definitely, genuine reconciliation will take place before the main elections. It could be a tough fight, but Dr. Okowa will emerge winner. He will sweep the votes in Delta South Senatorial district; he will surely win almost all the votes coming from Ika Federal constituency and most of the votes across Delta North Senatorial District.

It is better therefore, to join the winning team than hanging on the sidelines to moan. It's too late in the day. The Uvwiamughe declaration could become an albatross.

Just as it was claimed that Okowa won’t win the primaries and he went ahead to win it; that is how he would degrade all those who are conceited that he won’t win the governorship election by going ahead to win it and overawe them in the process.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
