President Goodluck Jonathan has named Vice President Namadi Sambo his running mate as he seeks re-election in February.
Mr. Jonathan made the announcement early Thursday after accepting his endorsement by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the party’s candidate for the election.
Announcing a running mate was a decision closely watched at the party’s national convention, amid speculations Mr. Jonathan may opt for someone different from Mr. Sambo, whom the president first named his vice in 2010.
In his speech, Mr. Jonathan said he will not fail Nigerians if re-elected.
Mr. Jonathan said his administration will fight and win the war against corruption, a malaise he has been extensively accused of doing little to curb.
He also assured aggrieved members of the PDP that their grouses will be amicably resolved..
