GUBER 2015: INEC DISPLAYS SENATOR IFEANYI OKOWA’S NAME AMONG OTHERS

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC yesterday displayed the list of qualified candidates to contest the February governorship elections across the country. Senator Ifeanyi Okowa made the list as the Delta State Peoples Democratic Party governorship Candidate for upcoming general election on February 28, 2015.

The list released by INEC had the names of PDP governorship candidates in all the States except in Imo State. Earlier yesterday, the People’s Democratic Party in a press release warned its members to desist from spreading falsehood. In a release signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh restated PDP’S commitment to a credible electioneering and issue-based campaign, saying that it would campaign in peace; with hope in the hearts of its leaders and members; with issues and ideas, and with its verifiable record of achievements.

Metuh in a statement on Friday said “the fact that the year 2015 unfolded with Eid-el-Maulud celebration has great significance and presents an important lesson to all Nigerians to live in peaceful co-habitation and brotherhood”.

The PDP scribe urged PDP aspirants who contested the primaries and lost to join hands with the Party's candidates to campaign rather than lying to the public that the party will substitute any candidate, ‘’PDP is a discipline Party and would not compromise with any group no matter the blackmail and financial inducements’’.  The Party also advised its members to stop using the National working Committee and that of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in deceiving the Party faithful and the general public of their future inclusion as candidates of the ruling Party in various positions which they contested for and lost .

Earlier, a Presidential appeal panel headed by President Goodluck Jonathan, advised all the aspirants to return home and support the candidates who won the nominations, that PDP under his leadership won’t give room for those sharp practices of substituting the winners for losers.
Mr. President’s meeting assured all the aggrieved aspirants that the Party will empower them through various appointments and other incentives. The National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Adamu Mau’zu also pleaded with the aspirants to accept their fate as the will of God and asked them to remain in the Party.

In a related development, following a passionate appeal from the Presidency, the senate leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, has eventually accepted the outcome of the People’s Democratic Party’s senatorial primary held in Cross River central senatorial zone late last year.

In a statement endorsed by his campaign director, Mr. Ernest Irek and made available to newsmen yesterday, Ndoma-Egba called on his teeming supporters to accept the result as the will of God. “The need to sheath our swords has become imminent, especially with the appeal from the president of Federal Republic of Nigeria to the effect that decorum and sacrifice should prevail to ensure the party’s victory at the next general elections.

The lawmaker urged all other aspirants to accept the decision of the party and forge ahead, we cannot win always though painful, God knows the best.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...

THE ENDURING LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP: Chief James Ibori Celebrated for His Impact on Delta State

The service featured the introduction of various dignitaries, including Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation who represented President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor Godwin Obaseki, and Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. As each dignitary was introduced, the church remained silent. However, the atmosphere dramatically changed when the name of Former Governor James Ibori was announced; the congregation erupted in wide jubilation and applause. This reaction was so profound that even Senator George Akume and Governor Obaseki could not hide their astonishment. The enthusiastic reception for Chief James Ibori during this solemn occasion highlighted his enduring legacy among the people of Delta State.
