[UPDATE] BREAKING NEWS: EXPLOSION ROCKS LAGOS

An explosion in Lagos on Sunday has raised fears that Islamist sect Boko Haram might have found its way to the commercial capital of the country. However, the substance which exploded at Number 88 Oworo Road, in Oworonsoki area of Lagos State is yet to be ascertained. Read more at:

According to Vanguard, which cited an eyewitness, the explosion occurred at about 2:15 pm when residents were returning to their respective homes after church.

Director, Lagos Fire Service, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, who confirmed the incident, said immediately the Service received the distress call at about 2:20pm, men of the Ilupeju Fire Service were dispatched to the area. However, he could not confirm immediately the cause of the explosion.
“We are still investigating the incidence to determine the immediate or remotes cause of the explosion,” he told said.

[Update] A resident of the area who spoke to Information Nigeria said the explosion was a gas explosion. “Although I was far from the place when it happened, it couldn’t have been a bomb blast. My wife also confirmed that it was a gas explosion,” the resident who identified himself as Mr Oyaleke said.

The Nation also reported that the explosion was caused by the gas compressor of a freezer, at a beer parlour in the area. The explosion reportedly affected the perimeter fence of a nearby hotel after blowing off the roof of the beer parlour.

The injured persons had since been rushed to a nearby hospital.
