GOVERNOR OKOWA: FULFILLING HIS ELECTION PROMISES IN JOBS AND WEALTH CREATION

Nigeria is currently battling with a dwindling economy which over the years thrived on crude oil as a mono- product. The fall in the price of crude oil in the international market has taken negative toll on the economy of many States including ours.
The new wave of challenge, therefore, is for States in Nigeria and particularly leaders, who hold the people’s mandate in trust, to arise and evolve alternative ways of achieving sustainable economic growth and prosperity as well as guaranteeing survival for its teeming populace.

Unemployment among our teeming youths is a major challenge facing the country. In fulfilling his electoral promises in this area, thousands of our youths have been trained by this administration on series of skills and manpower development. From the Agricultural, Agro- industry and professional skills acquisitions programmes in which youths continue to acquire new techniques to empower themselves.

To provide jobs and empower the teeming unemployed youth population, Governor Okowa has
set up six new schemes to grow the agro  and industrial sector of the economy, namely Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurial Programme (YEGEP), Skill Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP), Production and Processing Support Programme (PPSP), Tractorisation, Extension of Microcredit and Agricultural Loans and Development of Agro-industries, with the promise to bring more jobs within a short period of time.

The aims and objectives of these programmes is Job and wealth creation through enterprise development programme and practical hands-on training.  The schemes are designed and aimed at generating more sustainable employment opportunities for unemployed youths through empowering local businesses that can employ our youths to earn a wage while undergoing practical enterprise skills development and hands-on training from growing businesses in the State.
The vision is to establish Delta State with an enabling environment, where anyone regardless of their economic background can generate an idea, start and grow their business as easily as possible.
The objective also includes; creating the enabling structures needed to easily setup and grow business -- more growing businesses; more job opportunities.
These programmes will provide strategic solutions and reduce youths unemployment, by developing youths entrepreneurship through a set of franchise schemes providing world-class vocational skills training and high quality technical education to Delta youths as may be necessary.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...

This reaction was so profound that even Senator George Akume and Governor Obaseki could not hide their astonishment.
