GOVERNOR OKOWA SWEARS-IN MRS. DABONOR AS UVWIE COUNCIL BOSS

The leadership tussle that rocked Uvwie local government council of Delta State has been put to rest with the formal swearing-in of Chief (Mrs) Stella Dabonor as Chairman by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

"The Chairman is a product of the very long drawn issue between the Council and the House of Assembly," Governor Okowa said in Asaba during the swearing in ceremony which was witnessed by the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya and other top government functionaries.

According to the Governor, "the House of Assembly having found the former Chairman culpable, had to remove him from office and by law, the Vice Chairman had to step in." He stated that no act of lawlessness would be condoned in the State, emphasizing that the Councils should pay emphasis on the issues of environmental sanitation and primary healthcare.
While stating that his administration spends N678 million monthly to support the payment of primary school teachers in the state, Governor Okowa called for patience among local government workers.

He said, "we need to know that the local government councils are challenged with the issue of payment of salaries, I call for patience as this is a national malaise; payment of primary school teachers' salaries is by the local government and deducted from source, because, we have a large number of primary school teachers in the state, this has impacted negatively on the resources of the Councils.

The Governor congratulated Mrs Dabonor on her successful emergence as Chairman and challenged her to ensure a safer and clean local government that would be attractive to investors.

Responding, the Chairman, said she will carry out her functions diligently and with the fear of God.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...

This reaction was so profound that even Senator George Akume and Governor Obaseki could not hide their astonishment.
