WEEKENDFILE: FESTUS OVIE AGAS, SECRETARY TO THE DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT

Hon. Festus Ovie Agas was appointed Secretary to the Delta State Government on Sunday, May 31, 2015 by His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa at a reception organised in honour of His Excellency, after a thanksgiving service held at St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Asaba.

His appointment was well received with applauds and wild jubilation by Deltans. Hon. Agas apart from being a former Chairman of the DLA, was also, a Deputy Speaker and even an acting Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. He was the Director General of the Okowa Campaign Organization.

The turnout of Deltans and well-wishers of the Festus Agas at his swearing in ceremony was unprecedented. In his speech, Governor Okowa noted that exactly three days ago, I announced the appointment of Hon. Barrister Festus Ovie Agas as Secretary to the State Government. It was an announcement that many were not expecting at the time it was made. But that element of surprise only served to excite the audience who broke out in spontaneous jubilation that almost ended our lunch prematurely. Judging by that euphoria that greeted Hon. Agas’s appointment, it is self-evident that this administration has struck the right note with its first appointment.

In our society where leadership is often associated with position and power, and the appropriation of the commonwealth for selfish purposes, it can be very tempting to forget that leadership is about SERVICE, service unencumbered by ethnicity, nepotism and greed. That is what Hon. Agas represents.

The role of humility in Festus Agas’s choice cannot be discounted. Festus Ovie Agas is the epitome of humility. Humility is the true key to success. Successful people lose their way at times. They often embrace and overindulge from the fruits of success. Humility halts this arrogance and self-indulging trap. Humble people share the credit and wealth, remaining focused and hungry to continue the journey of success. Festus Agas is infectiously simple, humble, honest, trustworthy, scrupulous, honourably upright and all above prudent.

Festus Ovie Agas's intellectual and political experience is quite broad and profoundly enriched as it were by several international management programmes, conferences and seminars at home and overseas. He is a dutiful husband and father who strives within human limits to make a difference at home and wherever his core professional competence is required.

He inspires the Governor from within as the engine room for spreading Prosperity to all Deltans.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
