DELTA STATE AT 25, WE HAVE CAUSE TO CELEBRATE OUR EXISTENCE AS A STATE – GOVERNOR OKOWA

Delta State was created on August 27, 1991 with its capital in Asaba. Since its creation, Delta State has been governed by an array of leaders, some were military administrators and others, civilian governors at different point in time, in the history of the State.

These men have contributed immensely one way or the other to the socio-economic and political development of the State. The first administrator was Captain Luke Chijiuba Ochulor who was the pioneer military administrator from August 1991 to January 1992. Then came late Olorogun, Senator Felix Ibru who was the first elected governor of the State. Compol Abdulkadir Shehu followed between January 1992 and November 1993, he served as acting administrator.

Col. Bassey Asuquo served as administrator from December 1993 to September 1994, while Capt. Ibrahim kefas served as administrator between September 1994 and August 1996. Late Col. John Dung served between August 1996 and August 1998. Navy Capt. Walter Feghabo was the last military administrator, he served between August 1998 and May 1999.

With the return of democracy to the country in 1999, Delta State has been blessed with three elected democratic leaders who have brought some transformation to the State. These elected leaders, includes Chief James Onanefe Ibori, who governed between May 1999 and May 2007. Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, governed between May 2007 and May 2015. The incumbent governor of the State, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa mounted the saddle of governance on the 27 of May, 2015. He came on board with the onerous task of steering the State back into the path of growth, progress and development. Within one year, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has shown that his administration understands the needs and challenges of the State and that there are greater possibilities ahead.

His giant strides across the State in the areas of road construction and rehabilitation, empowerment of the unemployed, reforming the health, educational and agricultural sector, including a host of other developmental projects scattered across the 25 Local Government Areas of the State, despite the poor financial position of the country is a testament to his astuteness, prudence and experience in governance.

It is no coincidence, that the celebration of the silver jubilee is coming during his time as the governor of the State. As has been severally noted, it is right to postulates that he is divinely ordained for the task before him in the State.

Commenting on the celebration, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa said, “twenty years ago, many of us were young men and women confronted with the normal adjustments of defining our place within the dictates of time and space”.

“As a State created 25 years ago, our leaders and indeed, all Deltans, were full of high hopes, expectations and the determination to build a State of unity in diversity.

“Twenty-five years after the creation of our State, we have cause to celebrate our existence as a State, believing that there is sure but steady progression towards the upliftment of human dignity and socio-economic development”, the governor added.
