FLOODS AFTER HEAVY RAINS IS NOT UNIQUE TO DELTA STATE

flood on Chevron Drive in Lagos

It is not unusual across the globe for towns and cities to be flooded after a deluge of rain, which submerges roads, probably wash away bridges and even forces residents to flee their homes. Rain and flooding is part of the weather system in the Niger Delta. So there is nothing unique or out of place for there to be flooding after a deluge of rain either in Asaba or any other city for that matter.

However, some wailers have in the past two weeks being flying various pictures on the Facebook and other social media outlets wailing about flood in Delta State as if the State is the only area in the world that is prone to flood, or that there is flood, because of lack of commitment to flood control.

It is public knowledge that the flood reduction and control measures adopted by the Sen. Ifeanyi Authur Okowa led Delta State government in parts of the State are already paying off with the desired positive result of ensuring that flood prone communities in the State do not suffer the devastating and challenging effects of flooding occasioned by heavy rainfall and blockages of surface drainages and other natural water channels.

The government intervention, which involved the deployment of heavy duty equipment to clear and open all blocked and silted drains and water channels across the State has allowed for the easy and rapid flow of flood water to nearby natural sources.

Government actions so far is yielding positive results with the hope that clearing and opening of waterways will be a continuous process in the State.

It is the hope of every well-meaning Deltan that this crucial exercise will be a continuous process, while the State government should go after those who dump of refuse indiscriminately, allowing for the blockage of drains and water channels.
Perpetrators and offenders should be adequately punished in accordance with the State sanitation laws. It is also right for residents and business owners in the State to complement government efforts by de-silting the drains and maintain the environment around their premises. A Clean and healthy environment is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
