GOVERNOR OKOWA INAUGURATES TASKFORCE ON DECONGESTION OF PETROLEUM TANKERS IN WARRI

The Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has Inaugurated the Taskforce for the decongestion of Petroleum Tankers from the NPA Expressway, Warri Refinery and Environs as well as Ubeji-Ifie road. 

Inaugurating the Taskforce, weekend at Governor's Office Annex, Warri, the Governor said the setting up of the Taskforce became imperative following Government observation of buildup of Petroleum tankers in the area and was becoming a haven for all criminally minded persons. 

Governor Okowa, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon Festus Ovie Agas said the indiscriminate parking of Tankers along NPA Expressway, Warri Refinery and Environs and Ubeji-Ifie road posed dangers to lives and motorists and had resulted to various accident that have claimed lives and property worth millions of Naira. 

According to him, it was in the need for safety of lives and destruction of properties of Deltans in the affected areas that the State Government approved the establishment of the Taskforce. 

The Governor listed the terms of reference to include: to identify the cause (s) of the congestion of Petroleum tankers at y NPA Expressway, Warri Refinery and Environs, Refinery-Ubeji-Ifie road, and proffer solution (s) to eliminate the congestion; to ensure you Petroleum tankers and other articulated vehicles are not parked at any point along the Warri-NPA Expressway, Warri Refinery and Environs as well as Refinery-Ubeji-Ifie Road; to work out suitable traffic management scheme on major routes leading to the Warri Refinery and Tank Farms at Ifie in order to ensure free flow of traffic along the routes; to designate places where Petroleum tankers in and out of Warri to ensure that only tankers programmed to load are on the road. 

Others were; to collaborate with the tank farm owners and PPMC to work out modalities for orderly loading of Petroleum Products in Warri and Environs; to ensure that criminal elements do not hide under the cover of Petroleum tankers to commit crime in Warri and Environs and to make appropriate recommendation (s) to eliminate future congestion. 

He said it was the expectation of Government that members of the Taskforce would bring their experiences to bear on the assignment to the satisfaction of the Tanker Drivers and residents of Warri and Environs. 

Government, he added would continue to provide the enabling environment for everyone to carry out his or her business and called upon members of Petroleum Tanker Drivers to fully cooperate with the Taskforce. 

Commissioner for Transport, Vincent Uduaghan in his address said government was determined to find solution to the indiscriminate parking of Tankers around the NPA Expressway, Refinery and Ubeji/Ifie axis. 

The Commissioner said to restore sanity to the affected areas, Governor Okowa approved the constitution of a Taskforce to find short and long term solutions to the problem. 

The Chairman of the Taskforce, ACP Mohammed Muazu, the Warri Area Commander of Police, speaking on behalf of other members of the Taskforce, promised they would do a thorough job on the assignment given to them.
