RUMOURS AND GOSSIPS THRIVES IN SITUATIONS OF SCARCITY

We are in society where we commonly use such words as: Have you heard? Discussion of issues that cannot be confirmed. This is one of the dominant form of information and these pieces of information are believable.

These pieces of information are fueled particularly by the underlying uncertainties and anxieties that is characteristics of the political environment. Virtually all organizations at some point in time will contend with the spread of unverified stories about operations or stability.

In our society today, there are a lot of misinformation and distortions, which are far from reality. This is either due to ignorance or outright mischief. It is unfortunate that some people seem to be unaware of the dire financial situation of the country and States?

It is doubtful, if these detractors are oblivious of the commitment of those in leadership to ensure the prudent management of resources, especially under the present recession to enable workers get their salaries regularly.

Within the State, often and again, you hear of how Ika appointees and even community are enjoying, while other parts of the State are suffering. Even some have gone further to allege that DESOPADEC funds are being diverted to Asaba Capital Development Authority. This is all very far from the truth.

It is most unfortunate that we are in periods of lean resources. In such periods of scarcity, rationality is relegated to the background, while suspicion, rumours and gossips take control of the thought process.

Rumours are common among individuals that find themselves in ambiguous or threatening situations where they have no control over the outcomes.

Rumour and gossip have gone way beyond just word of mouth, they have no doubt become powerful means of distorting the implementation of public policies and programmes.
