A COUNTRY WHERE NO ONE SPEAKS FOR THE MASSES… Between principled stand and an opportunistic stand

To shut Emir Sanusi up some authority people are arguing that: he has a "boss" and as such must respect the "boss" and not continue to embarrass the "boss" in public, noting that those who did what he is doing in the past forfeited the opportunity of ever being able to make a change to the society . . . (Emir Sanusi II, Alaafin Adeyemi II). To his opponents, Emir Sanusi 1, can change the society by silently conveying his ideas and criticisms to the governments of the day. Arguing that he did not seek the Emir-ship hoping or wishing to be deposed. Even though you are not a Christian, you must be aware of Christ saying "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's".  Nothing could be more selfish and inhuman than this position.

As an Emir, Sanusi represents millions of downtrodden, speaking on their behalf is not opportunism. Nigerians have a way of pretending to represent people silently but merely represent their personal interest, if you really represent the people, then speak out.

There are human beings who don't give a damn about personal comfort and safety in the cause of fighting injustice, oppression, and exploitation of the weak. If Zik, Awo, et al had thought as you think, would they have dared the British? If Malcolm X (a few days before he was assassinated, he admitted to a journalist on television that he was already a dead man, for he had been marked for assassination) would have fought against injustice in America had they thought as you think?

Emir Sanusi is speaking on behalf of his people, that's what effective leaders do. When governor Balarabe Musa rejected the criminal entreaties of NPN members of the old Kaduna House of Assembly, he knew that it could lead to his impeachment and removal from office (since NPN held the majority in that inglorious legislature).

Yet he refused to go along with oppressing the poor and after it led to his impeachment and removal from office, did the world collapse upon him? Is he still not alive today and more relevant to Nigerians than all the NPN crooks who victimized him combined? Are you unaware that what PRP of that era stood for, and for which Musa was impeached and Rimi given hell, is at the core of what Emir Sanusi is speaking against today?

Do you think that Ebitu Ukiwe did not know that he could be removed as Babangida's VP if he refused to accept IBB's unilateral making of Nigeria an OIC member in 1986? Did the world collapse after he refused to go along with evil and was removed? Did the world collapse on General Ishola Williams and Abubakar Umar after they chose to leave the army than go along with Abacha's military junta?

Some call themselves Christians, yet they know not that Jesus was asking his followers to not back away from defending what they believe is just and right for fear of being penalized? How could they not know that was what Jesus meant by "man shall not live by bread alone..."?

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
