DELTA STATE: YOU NEVER GIVE UP ON A QUINTESSENTIAL THING

Image may contain: 3 people
Politics is supposed to be a vehicle for achieving public good. But it is not so with Nigerian politics. Here, the interest of majority of those in politics is private and self-centred. In such state of affairs, honesty and integrity are thrown to the wind, while utter shamelessness takes over.

What is APC without majority of PDP leaders and members, who now occupy its rank? Every day, one hears the slogan about PDP destroying Nigeria, then you begin to wonder whether they are referring to the acronym PDP or its members and leaders, who have now largely moved over to APC. It is more disheartening in Delta State where those who were in the commanding heights under the two preceding administrations are the ones now loudest in proclaiming PDP failings, while singing APCTakeOverDelta.

But you can never give up on a quintessential thing. Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has shown in the last two years plus that he has the competence, capacity and disposition to good governance of the State.

The economic downturn in the country notwithstanding, the kernel remains that Senator Okowa is a politician with profuse passion for bettering his people’s lot.  As we move towards 2019, there is the certitude that Deltans cannot be hoodwinked by the current conspectus of oppositional tirades and tantrums in newspapers and the social media. The puerile context, diseased contents and cerebral shallowness of the desperate messages to undermine the civilization and intellect of Deltans.

There is nothing for anyone to salvage in Delta State. The State has advanced beyond the level of mediocrity and political rascality that is the hallmark of opposition politics in the State. It may not yet be an El Dorado, but, assuredly with sound practices in financial management by the governor, Delta’s glory is as good as immeasurably revalidated.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
