Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has finally resigned, parliament
speaker Jacob Mudenda has said. It was gathered that the surprise announcement
came as lawmakers debated an impeachment motion against Mugabe in a joint
sitting of parliament.
CNN reported that when the news of Mugabe's resignation broke, crowds in
the streets of Harare broke out in rapturous celebrations, raising their fists
and waving Zimbabweans flags to mark the historic moment. According to Reuters,
the letter from Mugabe said the decision was voluntary.
Lawmakers were also reported to have broke out in thunderous applause
and cheers s Mugabe's letter was read out in Parliament. With the resignation
of Mugabe, an era has ended in Zimbabwe. Mugabe is the only leader the nation
has known since it achieved independence from Britain in 1980.
