Many people were injured on
Saturday as armed thugs disrupted the congress organized by a faction of the
All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state.
The faction was said to be
led by the senator representing Ondo North, Ajayi Boroffice.
The thugs, suspected to be
members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), chased
delegates and journalists out of the BTO Event Center, Akure, Ondo state
capital, the venue of the congress.
Those injured included a lawmaker representing Idanre/Ifedore
Federal Constituency, Dele Baderinwa, Osun State Commissioner for Regional
Integration, Bola Ilori, and other chieftains of the party.
The Chairman of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ondo
state and Thisday correspondent, James Sowole; The Nation and Daily Sun
Correspondents, Damisi Ojo and Bamigbola Gbolagunte, were beaten by the NURTW
thugs.
Three vehicles were completed
destroyed at the venue of the Congress though no lives were lost.
Traffic was disrupted along
the Ilesha Garage Road for more than one hour before men from the State Police
Command came to restore order.
Members of the faction later
reassembled at Igbara-Oke, Ifedore Local Government Area, where they held the
Congress and elected Idowu Otetubi as the APC State Chairman and Gani Muhammed
as Secretary.
However, the Governor
Oluwarotimi Akeredolu faction held its own congress at the International
Conference and Events Center (Dome), Akure.
Ade Adetimehin, the former
acting State Chairman, emerged as the state chairman unopposed.
Other members of the state
executive committee of the party also emerged through a consensus arrangement.
