For those who have been
following the political intrigues in Imo state, there is no doubt that the
political waters in Imo state have remained murky till now. This is following
the fact that Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the executive governor of Imo State, has
been in a running battle with APC stakeholders in Imo, who accused him of
mismanaging the state’s resources and high-handedness.
APC Imo state stakeholders’ refusal to back the governor on his
choice of his son in-law, Uche Nwosu, to succeed him as governor and the crisis
that followed the last ward congresses where executive members of
the Imo state APC were elected, polarised the party in the state. Governor
Okorocha and his supporters had boycotted the congress and insisted
that a fresh date for ward congress be fixed.
Meanwhile, as the party’s National Chairman, Chief John
Odigie-Oyegun, has sustained the ward congresses and swore in the elected
executive members, Okorocha had felt betrayed by the party leaders. As such he
has accused Oyegun of trying to destroy the party because he was finishing his
tenure as the party’s chairman.
Against this backdrop, the APC, through its outgoing National
Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, has cautioned the Imo state governor
against his incessant assault on the party. The statement reads in part, “in
recent weeks, the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, has made libelous
attacks o our party and its leaders a daily occurrence over the recent
concluded congresses in Imo state”.
The APC leaders have ultimately advised Okorocha to take the part
of honour and seek reconciliation with elected executive members of the APC in
the state in the interest of the party.
Political observers
believe that in the midst of trying to maintain control over the party in the
state and establish a political dynasty, Okorocha is continuously losing
grounds and has found himself struggling. A school of thought believes that his
initial confidence was partly due to his affiliation with the presidency. But
it seems his confidence is failing him as it looks like he is losing his grip
on the party structures in Imo state. Analysts believe that for Okorocha to
remain politically relevant, under the circumstance, he has to throw in the towel
and allow sleeping dogs lie and mend fences with the party in Imo State and at
the national level, as he has been advised. Would he do that? The days ahead
would tell.
