The indefinite strike scheduled to commence on November 6, by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, has been stopped by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.
The order was given by Justice Sanusi Kano, on Friday, when he ruled on an ex parte application moved on behalf of the Federal Government by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Dayo Akpata
Justice Kado ruled that if the strike is allowed to take effect it would affect the economy negatively leading to an economic loss for both public and private institutions and could further affect the health of many Nigerian who will not be able to access health facilities during the strike.
Recall that the organised labour had threatened to commence an indefinite strike action to demand an increase in the national minimum wage.
The last meeting between leaders of NLC and the Federal Government ended in deadlock, FG had insisted that it could only afford #24,000, while governors under the Nigerian Governor’s Forum had insisted they can afford #22,500 but labour insisted that it wants #30,000.
Apart from the NLC and the TUC, the NGF is also joined as a defendant in the suit. The case was adjourned till November 8 by Justice Kado for hearing of the motion on notice seeking the interlocutory injunction to stop the strike.
The judge ordered that the court order and other papers be filed on all the defendants.
