The Speaker of the Delta House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, says the Seventh Assembly, of the Delta State House of Assembly received 14 bills between June 2019 and June 2020.

Oborevwori said this while briefing newsmen on the activities of the Assembly to commemorate the first anniversary of the Seventh Assembly on Wednesday in Asaba.

He said that out of the 14 bills received by the Assembly during the period, nine bills were passed while the remaining five were at various committees’ stages.

The Speaker said that out of the 14 bills, 10 of them were Executive bills, while the remaining four were private members’ bills.

Oborevwori also disclosed that during the period under review, the Assembly received and passed 66 motions.

The Speaker also said that despite the  outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic and the attendant health risk, the leadership of the Assembly in line with the state’s government guidelines and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols, ensured that the House sat at plenary to consider and pass critical finance bills.

“These bills have been able to effectively position the State in these trying times.

“Some of these bills are:  the Delta State Fiscal Responsibility Amendment Law, the Delta State Public Procurement law and the Delta State revised Appropriation law,” he said.

Oborevwori also said that the Assembly with the cooperation of the Executive was able to achieve and recorded some progress, especially, in the area of enhancing legislative competence of members and staff in the discharge of their duties.

He said that after the inauguration of the Seventh Assembly, the House constituted 30 special and outstanding committees.

He said that this was in line with the provisions of Section 103 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.

Oborevwori also said that the members of the Assembly actively engaged in constituency visits and town hall meetings.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
