Lauretta Onochie, the former Chairperson of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), finds herself in a precarious situation in the United Kingdom, according to information gathered by SaharaReporters.
Following President Bola Tinubu's decision to dismiss the board she led, Onochie reportedly fled Nigeria for the UK. Her sudden departure may be related to the financial scandals that plagued the NDDC during her tenure.
Upon
arriving in the UK, she sought refuge in her cousin's apartment in Barking Town,
East London. However, she was met with rejection and eviction from the
property.
A
family member, speaking anonymously to SaharaReporters, shared, "Lauretta
Onochie has fled to the UK and she's currently homeless because she doesn't
have anywhere to stay. Seems she wasn't expecting her dismissal yet. The
President's decision really shocked her.
"On
getting to the UK, she made an attempt to force herself into her cousin’s house
in Salamanca Place, Barking Essex. She started blackmailing her cousin emotionally
to accept her into his house as she had nowhere else to go in the UK. She said
she was a victim of a witch-hunt by the Tinubu government and that she needed
somewhere she couldn’t be traced to for the time being.
"This
is someone who abandoned her family members while in power; she didn’t even
know the children of this cousin of hers till she got to his place during the
week. Karma started too early if you asked me; a whole Lauretta now homeless in
the UK."
Videos
obtained by SaharaReporters show Onochie facing difficulties in her cousin's
East London residence. In one of the videos, her cousin's daughter confronts
her, expressing her displeasure with sharing a room with Onochie.
Despite
the controversy surrounding her nomination in December 2022, Onochie was
confirmed by the Senate as the substantive Chairperson of NDDC. Prior to this
role, she served as Buhari’s Special Assistant on New Media.
During
her tenure as NDDC board chairperson, Onochie faced allegations of attempting
to assume the role of the commission's accounting officer, contrary to the law.
The NDDC Act 2000 designates the Managing Director as the chief executive and
accounting officer of the commission, responsible for its day-to-day
administration, while the board has a supervisory role over NDDC management.
In May, SaharaReporters reported Onochie's request for a mansion, cars, and full control over contractors from the Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku, which was not approved, according to sources.
