DELTA STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION DISPUTE: Anticipation Builds As Deltans Glare At Appeal Court

The residents of Delta State are eagerly anticipating the adjudication of the Appeal Court in the case of Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege and the All Progressives Congress (APC) appeal.

This dispute originated from the Delta State Governorship election held on March 18, where Sheriff Oborewori of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) was wrongly declared the winner. Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege and the APC challenged the election results.

Regrettably, the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal upheld Oborevwori's victory, leading Omo-Agege and the APC to file an appeal, asserting that the ruling of the tribunal constituted a miscarriage of justice and a violation of the rule of law.

Many Deltans expressed dissatisfaction when the tribunal failed to address apparent violations of the Electoral Act 2022, INEC regulations, guidelines, and the 2023 general election manual. This decision was made despite substantial documentary evidence provided, raising concerns about the credibility of the legal system.

The recent verdicts of the Appeal Courts and the Supreme Court have been a source of optimism, as they demonstrated profound legal wisdom and renewed our faith in the judicial system.

The reaffirmation of the APC's victory in the National and State Assembly, despite previous questionable decisions by the National Assembly and Governorship Election Petitions Tribunals, has been a significant achievement.

However, a critical challenge still lies ahead - the restoration of the governorship mandate to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and the APC. This path is essential for bringing real change and development to our state, which has long suffered from mismanagement. The atmosphere is charged with optimism, and Deltans can sense it.

Deltans continue to hold onto hope as the Appeal Court deliberates on the case. Their optimism is that both the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court will confirm Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election, thereby re-establishing trust in the legal process and democracy.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
