MISPLACED PRIORITIES: Delta State's Budgetary Decisions Amidst Economic Hardship

In the midst of severe economic hardship faced by workers and citizens, alongside dilapidated infrastructure across the State, the Delta state government's recent budgetary decisions reveal a concerning trend of misplaced priorities. A review of Delta State's budget performance reports highlights an alarming expenditure pattern: a staggering N6.8 billion was spent within the first three months of 2024 solely on the purchase of luxury vehicles.

The budget document outlines that a total of N9.9 billion was allocated for the acquisition of 50 Toyota SUVs, 60 Hilux pick-ups, 150 Toyota Corollas, and 10 Coaster buses. Shockingly, out of this budgeted amount, N6.8 billion had already been expended in the initial quarter of the year.

To put this into perspective, the amount spent on vehicles surpasses the state's capital expenditure for its Ministry of Energy, which stood at N2.8 billion for the same period. Furthermore, the expenditure on vehicles overshadows the capital outlays for several other critical sectors: housing (N1.8 billion), water resources (N16 million), trade and investment (N201 million), primary education (N400.1 million), and secondary education (N667.9 million).

Even more concerning is the comparison with the health sector, which received a capital expenditure of just N1 billion in the first quarter of 2024. In essence, the funds directed towards vehicle purchases equal the combined capital expenditure for these crucial sectors, amounting to N6.8 billion for the first three months of the year.

This development comes at a time when Delta State is grappling with significant economic challenges, prompting widespread calls for a reduction in the cost of governance. The disproportionate allocation of resources towards non-essential expenditures such as vehicles, while vital sectors suffer from underfunding, underscores a critical need for a reassessment of budgetary priorities. The state's leadership must address these concerns to ensure a more balanced and equitable distribution of resources, fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for all its citizens.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
