Senator Ned Nwoko's attack on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, while failing to criticize Delta State’s immediate past governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who governed the state for eight years, is not a balanced critique.
According to Nwoko, who represents Delta North, what Delta receives from the federation account monthly is more than what five South-Eastern states receive combined. While this may be true, the fact remains that Oborevwori has been governor for just one year, while his Anioma brother, Okowa, ruled for eight years.
Why hasn’t Ned Nwoko criticized Okowa, who mortgaged Delta’s finances to sponsor the presidential campaign of Atiku Abubakar, of which Okowa was the running mate? During Okowa’s eight years of PDP-led administration, Nwoko was silent. Now, suddenly, he has emerged as a critic of Oborevwori’s administration.
Ned Nwoko would not have attacked Delta's poor performance if a Delta Igbo were still governor. He shouldn't criticize Governor Oborevwori simply because he is Urhobo. Nwoko turned a blind eye to the flaws in his fellow Deltan Igbo, Okowa's administration but has now awakened to criticize Oborevwori.
I am no supporter of poor governance, whether the leader is Urhobo or not. However, Nwoko’s criticism of Oborevwori is both malicious and unjustified. Nwoko is among the Senators who recently received SUVs from Oborevwori. Therefore, he has no moral grounds to criticize any administration when he himself benefits from poor governance both at the national level and within the state.
Why didn’t Nwoko reject Oborevwori’s Jeep if he truly cared about stopping the waste of public funds that could be used for meaningful development in the state? Both APC and PDP lawmakers are cooperating with the federal executive to further loot the nation’s resources.
During Okowa’s administration, the looting was rampant, and Nwoko remained silent. Okowa ruined Delta. Although it is true that Oborevwori was not entirely prepared for the role, we are still seeing the awarding of contracts for the construction of flyover bridges to Julius Berger, even though it may be too early to commend his administration.
I am not a fan of Oborevwori, but his one year in office has already been better than Okowa’s eight years of misrule.
