OVERCOMING PARTISANSHIP: The Progressive Leadership of Governor Oborevwori in Delta State

In today's political climate, excessive partisanship often clouds the judgment of opponents, making it difficult to objectively assess the achievements of those in office. This tendency is especially evident in Delta State, where many opponents of the incumbent governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, remain reluctant to acknowledge his progress. However, in the less than two years since he assumed office, Governor Oborevwori has shown a clear vision for transformative governance in Delta State, warranting a fair and unbiased evaluation of his leadership.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori entered office with a commitment to complete all abandoned and ongoing projects throughout the state. This approach reflects a remarkable sense of continuity and responsibility, as he vowed not to abandon any project, whether it was initiated by his administration or inherited from past governments. Such a pledge is significant, especially in a political landscape where new leaders often focus solely on their agendas. For this reason, Oborevwori’s promise to see every project through, regardless of origin, should be appreciated by every well-meaning Deltan.

More importantly, Governor Oborevwori has backed his words with action. Within a short span, he has commissioned several projects that are already contributing to the development of Delta State. This proactive approach signals his commitment to elevating the state’s infrastructure and ensuring the completion of projects that hold potential value for the people.

Governor Oborevwori has also distinguished himself as a trustworthy and accountable leader dedicated to reshaping governance in Delta State. His reputation for integrity is further bolstered by an anecdote shared by former President Goodluck Jonathan. At the commissioning of the State High Court headquarters, Jonathan highlighted how Oborevwori, during his tenure as the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, returned over half a billion naira in unused funds to the state treasury. This rare act of fiscal responsibility serves as a testament to Oborevwori’s commitment to ethical governance and sound financial management.

In the past sixteen months, Delta State has witnessed impressive progress under Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, despite financial constraints. Even with irrevocable standing orders that have reduced federal allocations and interest obligations on previous administrations' loans, Oborevwori has chosen to steer Delta State clear of new public sector debt. His administration has instead prioritized fiscal discipline, opting to fund initiatives without resorting to borrowing. This approach has ensured the sustainable financing of ongoing and completed projects, positioning Delta State as a model of responsible governance.

As Governor Oborevwori continues to lead Delta State toward progress, Deltans are encouraged to move beyond old biases and evaluate his administration with an open mind. His commitment to completing inherited projects, fiscal prudence, and transparent governance demonstrates a sincere desire to foster long-term development in Delta State. If evaluated without the limitations of partisanship, his leadership stands as an encouraging example of sustainable governance, worthy of recognition.
