HONOURARY DOCTOR OF SCIENCE AWARD FOR GOVERNOR OBOREVWORI: Recognition of Excellence in leadership

The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, was recently honoured for his remarkable contributions to governance and public service with the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in Public Policy and Strategy by Novena University, Ogume. This prestigious recognition was awarded during the university’s 5th combined convocation ceremony for the 2018/2019 to 2023/2024 academic sessions, held at its Amai campus in Ukwuani Local Government Area. This accolade is not only a testament to the governor’s exemplary leadership but also a reflection of his commitment to improving the lives of Deltans through strategic and inclusive governance.

The honourary degree symbolizes more than academic recognition; it is an acknowledgment of Governor Oborevwori’s vision, determination, and capacity to lead Delta State towards a future of progress and sustainable development. His administration has consistently demonstrated a focus on infrastructure development, human capital investment, and the promotion of economic growth, earning him accolades from both supporters and even unexpected quarters within the opposition.

Prominent figures, including the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo; Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas; and Reverend Francis Waive, a serving member of the House of Representatives, have publicly commended the governor for his leadership style and innovative approach to governance. These commendations are particularly significant given the political divides in the State, highlighting Governor Oborevwori’s ability to transcend partisan lines and gain the respect of individuals across the political spectrum. Furthermore, Chief Edwin Clark, a revered Ijaw and South-South elder statesman, recently singled out Governor Oborevwori for praise. Such recognition from a figure of Chief Clark’s stature underscores the governor’s efforts to promote inclusivity, peace, and development in Delta State.

As a renowned philosopher once observed, “Politics is war fought without guns.” The adversarial nature of politics often creates a zero-sum environment where the achievements of the incumbent are viewed as threats to the opposition’s relevance. This mindset explains why some opposition members have resorted to relentless campaigns of misinformation and baseless criticism in an attempt to undermine Governor Oborevwori’s accomplishments. These detractors have taken to social media platforms and public forums to launch unfounded attacks, yet their efforts have done little to diminish the governor’s focus on delivering impactful governance.

Despite such distractions, Governor Oborevwori has remained undeterred. His administration’s developmental agenda speaks louder than any words. Across Delta State, visible progress is being made in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and job creation. Numerous road projects are ongoing, renovation of schools and hospitals are being commissioned, and social programs aimed at alleviating poverty and empowering youths are in full swing. This commitment to action over rhetoric reflects the governor’s belief in letting results speak for themselves.

It is both ironic and troubling, however, that critics from fragmented and dysfunctional political platforms are attempting to tarnish the reputation of a leader who is clearly focused on delivering progress for the people. Many of these detractors, often vocal on social media, are more concerned with engaging in cheap rhetoric than addressing the glaring weaknesses within their own political organizations. Their inability to unite their ranks or offer credible alternatives raises questions about their capacity to govern a diverse and complex state like Delta. Instead of channeling their energy into baseless attacks, these critics would do well to focus on repairing their fractured political structures and addressing the deep-seated issues within their parties.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership stands as a beacon of hope and progress for Delta State. The honourary degree conferred by Novena University is not just a ceremonial gesture but a validation of his commitment to public service, strategic governance, and the well-being of Deltans. It is a clear indication that his efforts are being noticed and appreciated, not just within the State but beyond its borders.

As his administration continues to implement transformative policies and deliver on its promises, it is evident that Delta State is on a trajectory of sustainable growth and development. Governor Oborevwori’s inclusive leadership style, coupled with his dedication to transparency and accountability, is paving the way for a brighter future for all. Recognitions such as the one from Novena University serve as a reminder that true leadership is not defined by rhetoric but by action and results.

Delta State is undoubtedly in capable hands under Governor Oborevwori’s stewardship. His unwavering dedication to excellence and progress ensures that the state remains a model of good governance in Nigeria. With each milestone achieved, the governor is not only securing a legacy of impactful leadership but also inspiring others to rise above partisanship and work for the collective good of society.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
