As the first Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly to ascend to the governorship, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori's political trajectory is a testament to divine favour, resilience, and team spirit. Surviving six years as Speaker in a legislative environment known for frequent leadership turnovers speaks volumes about his ability to unite and lead—a quality that now defines his tenure as governor.
During the electioneering campaign, he confidently declared his "street credibility." At the time, many dismissed this statement or failed to grasp its significance. However, his remarkable achievements today have made its meaning crystal clear, demonstrating his practical leadership and deep connection with the people.
Initially underestimated—especially by opposition critics—Oborevwori has proved them wrong. With strategic vision and undeniable competence, he has brought refreshing dynamism to governance in Delta State.
A Bold Start: Infrastructure Renaissance
Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Governor Oborevwori has demonstrated readiness and resolve. His swift focus on completing ongoing projects underscores his deep awareness of the task ahead.
The Asaba/Ughelli road dualization gained momentum, particularly in the Isoko axis, which was nearly abandoned before the 2023 election. Work on the Ogwashi-Uku Bridge is nearing completion, raising hopes for the project's swift conclusion.
He has prioritized critical infrastructure, including a six-lane access road into the Asaba Waterfront City—a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the state government and private developers. Contractors have assured the government that the road will be completed by July.
Notably, he engaged Julius Berger, a globally recognized construction giant, for projects like the Warri/Effurun flyovers and road expansion—the first of its kind in Delta State. This decision reflects his commitment to quality and durability in state projects.
A significant milestone has been reached with the completion of the Beneku Bridge, providing indigenes and travelers to Ndokwa East with easier access to their riverine communities. Previously, crossing the Ase Creek was only possible via an expensive pontoon service. There are numerous other key infrastructure development projects that are too many to list here.
Oborevwori’s administration has also enforced a zero-tolerance policy for substandard work, raising the bar for excellence in public infrastructure. His insistence on meeting government specifications is paving the way for sustainable development.
Fiscal Responsibility: A Governor Who Saves
At a time when borrowing has become the norm for many states, Governor Oborevwori’s fiscal prudence stands out. His ambitious 2025 budget of ₦979 billion has no deficit—a feat achieved through careful financial management. By saving a percentage of the state’s revenue from both the Federation Account and internally generated income, he is laying the foundation for a lasting financial legacy.
Proving the Skeptics Wrong
Nearly two years into his tenure, Governor Oborevwori has exceeded expectations. His judicious use of state resources, focus on impactful projects, and commitment to financial discipline have earned him the respect of even his harshest critics. He has proven that leadership is not about lofty rhetoric but about delivering tangible results that improve lives.
Politically, he has also made significant strides. He has skillfully navigated national political, administrative, and security structures while fostering inclusive governance within the state. His leadership approach ensures broad-based participation, equity, and responsiveness to the diverse needs of Delta State. He has engaged traditional rulers, political leaders, civil society, women, and youth—making governance truly people-oriented.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration is a testament to the power of preparation meeting opportunity. His bold vision, fiscal discipline, and dedication to quality have set Delta State on a path of sustainable growth. As Deltans, we are witnessing the unfolding of a leadership era defined by service, integrity, and a commitment to the greater good.
The Governor is doing well. My only suggestion is that he should build power plants and distribute electricity. This will encourage industrial development of the state and provide employment opportunities. Thanks
ReplyDeleteFollowing from what have been seen as legacy projects being embarked upon by the Oborevwori administration, one can proudly say that he has started well. I will still implore him to do more by remembering the Isoko communities in Ndokwa East LGA which have no access roads from Ibrede, through Awa to iyede Ame as these communities do not feel the dividends of democracy or Oborevwori's benevolence. He should please look into their plights - no road, no light, even pipe borne water.
