OBOREVWORI RELEASES ₦10bn TO CLEAR PENSION BACKLOG IN DELTA

In a major relief for retirees, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the immediate release of ₦10 billion to clear outstanding pension arrears owed pensioners in the state.

The Governor made the announcement on Tuesday during a meeting with the State Pension Board, led by the Chairman of the Bureau of State Pensions, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, and the State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu.

Governor Oborevwori explained that the meeting was convened to address pressing issues affecting retirees, including the payment of backlogs and challenges associated with migration under the contributory pension scheme.

₦36.4 Billion Already Paid in Pensions

Highlighting his administration’s strides, the Governor disclosed that ₦36.4 billion had already been disbursed for pension payments since he assumed office, with ₦1.4 billion released monthly to meet ongoing obligations.

He stressed that his government has never defaulted on its monthly pension responsibilities. However, he noted that inherited arrears needed to be cleared urgently:

> “Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is duly owed to them, and under my watch, their welfare will remain top priority,” Oborevwori assured.

Transparency and Accountability

To ensure proper use of the ₦10 billion release, the Governor announced the constitution of an oversight team to supervise its implementation, pledging strict adherence to transparency and accountability.

According to him, the gesture reaffirms his administration’s MORE Agenda and commitment to prioritizing the welfare of senior citizens who labored in service to Delta State.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Reacting to the development, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, Chairman of the Bureau for State Pensions, described the approval as a “pleasant surprise,” assuring that the funds would serve as a huge relief to retirees.

He further pledged that the system was structured to guarantee accountability and that the funds would be used exclusively for pension payments.

On his part, Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu, Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, praised the Governor’s action:

> “You took us unawares; what we were expecting was far less than the ₦10 billion you just approved. I am elated, and I know that when pensioners across the state hear this news, they will be very happy.”

With this bold step, Governor Oborevwori has once again demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of retirees while reinforcing confidence in his government’s responsive and people-focused governance.
