INEC ADJUSTS 2027 GENERAL ELECTION DATES FOLLOWING CALLS FOR REVIEW

Abuja, Nigeria – February 26, 2026 – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially revised the timetable for Nigeria's 2027 general elections, shifting the presidential and National Assembly polls to an earlier date.

In a recent announcement, INEC confirmed that the presidential election, along with National Assembly elections, will now take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027. The governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have been rescheduled to Saturday, February 6, 2027.

This adjustment comes in response to respectful calls from stakeholders urging the commission to review and realign the electoral calendar. The previous schedule, set under the Electoral Act 2022, had fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, and the governorship and state assembly polls for March 6, 2027.

The revision aligns with the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which introduced changes necessitating a review of the statutory timelines for election activities. INEC stated that it has approved and issued a revised timetable and schedule of activities to ensure compliance with the updated legal framework.

The commission's decision reflects ongoing engagements with political parties, civil society, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth preparations for the polls. Further details on the full revised schedule, including key milestones such as voter registration updates and party primaries, are expected to be released in due course.

INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, assuring Nigerians that all necessary adjustments are being made to uphold democratic standards.
