BREAKING THE JINX: Sheriff Oborevwori and the Politics of Unity in Delta State

Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff F. O. Oborevwori has redefined the political rhythm of Delta State, transforming what was once a landscape of rivalry and fragmentation into a theatre of cooperation and shared purpose. In a State long shaped by ethnic sensitivities, partisan competition, and intra-party fissures, his leadership has altered the narrative, replacing suspicion with trust and division with consensus.

Since Delta’s creation in 1991 from the old Bendel State, its rich diversity across the three senatorial districts - Delta North, Delta Central, and Delta South has often intersected with political rivalry in ways that deepened fault lines. Competition between dominant platforms, such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside recurring factional struggles within parties, frequently slows governance and fosters imbalance. Successive administrations contended with entrenched loyalties and regional contestations that sometimes left development efforts uneven and political stability fragile.

When Oborevwori was elected governor in March 2023, he stepped into this complex terrain with a disposition markedly different from the combative traditions of the past. His leadership style: measured, humble, and deliberately inclusive, quickly earned him broad acceptance beyond partisan lines. He cultivated the image and practice of a pan-Deltan leader, building bridges across ethnic blocs, reconciling aggrieved stakeholders, and fostering dialogue where discord once prevailed. Rather than governing from a position of exclusion, he prioritised consensus and inclusion, sisignalling departure from winner-take-all politics.

A defining moment in this evolving story came in 2025 when he, alongside key political actors, moved from the PDP to the APC in what was widely perceived as a strategic realignment. Beyond party labels, the shift symbolised consolidation. By 2026, the Delta APC had witnessed unprecedented internal reconciliation, with previously opposing tendencies aligning under a common banner. Old divisions steadily gave way to collaboration, and political gatherings began to reflect unity of purpose rather than competition for dominance.

This culture of harmony has not remained confined to party structures; it has shaped governance itself. Under his MORE Agenda, Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security, policy direction has emphasised inclusion and equitable reach. Infrastructure projects cut across districts without discrimination; healthcare and educational investments reflect statewide balance; youth and women empowerment initiatives seek broad participation; and resource allocation demonstrates sensitivity to historically underserved communities. The result is a growing sense among Deltans that development is collective, not sectional.

The dividends of this approach are visible. Political discourse in the State has grown more mature, characterised less by hostility and more by constructive engagement. Stability across ethnic and regional lines has strengthened the foundation for long-term planning and innovation. Communities from upland towns to riverine settlements increasingly speak of shared ownership in the state’s progress. In less than three years, Delta has advanced with renewed confidence, anchored by a leadership philosophy that prizes unity as both method and goal.

By reconciling factions, calming historical tensions, and steering diverse interests toward common objectives, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has effectively broken a longstanding pattern of political fragmentation in Delta State. His tenure underscores a simple but powerful truth: enduring progress is built not on dominance but on cohesion and inclusion. In forging alignment where there was once division, he has laid the groundwork for a more stable, forward-looking Delta, one in which collective aspiration replaces sectional rivalry, and unity becomes the enduring compass of governance.
