ON COMPETENCE AND CYNICISM: Understanding Governor Oborevwori’s Appointment as Campaign Finance Director

Nigerian political discourse is often driven by an unfortunate reflex: the tendency to view every political action through the lens of suspicion. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s appointment as Director of Finance and Treasurer of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council has elicited precisely such a reaction. Rather than examine the governor’s credentials and the demands of the assignment, some opposition voices, including Oliver Fejiro, have chosen to portray the appointment as a scheme to divert Delta State’s resources into a presidential campaign.

That argument may be politically convenient, but it does not stand up to serious scrutiny.

At its heart, Governor Oborevwori’s appointment is a recognition of competence and trust. The position of Director of Finance and Treasurer is not ceremonial. It requires integrity, discretion, sound judgement, organisational capacity and financial discipline. It involves coordinating campaign resources, ensuring proper accountability and managing a complex financial structure with responsibility and transparency. These are qualities Governor Oborevwori has demonstrated over the course of his public service, from his years as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly to his current role as Governor of Delta State.

To suggest that his appointment automatically makes him a conduit for siphoning State resources is to deliberately misunderstand the nature of the responsibility. Being entrusted with the financial management of a campaign is not the same as being asked to personally finance it. The role is managerial and custodial, not an invitation to raid the treasury of the state he governs.

The claim that the national leadership of the APC appointed Governor Oborevwori because it intends to "dip its hands into the till of Delta State" is equally difficult to sustain. A presidential campaign is a national undertaking involving a broad and structured organisation, fundraising mechanisms, supporters, stakeholders and approved channels for managing campaign resources. It is neither logical nor credible to suggest that the financial success of a national presidential campaign would depend on the treasury of one State.

More importantly, Governor Oborevwori’s record in Delta State offers a clear explanation for why he would be considered suitable for such a sensitive assignment. Since assuming office in 2023, he has demonstrated a deliberate approach to fiscal management, public expenditure and the deployment of government resources. His administration has pursued development while maintaining a strong emphasis on prudence, prioritisation and responsible financial management. The ability to allocate resources efficiently and ensure that public funds are directed towards clearly defined objectives is a practical leadership skill, and one that is directly relevant to the responsibilities of a campaign finance director.

Critics are, of course, entitled to question political appointments and demand accountability. That is part of democratic engagement. But criticism loses its value when suspicion is presented as fact and cynicism replaces reasoned analysis. Not every appointment is a conspiracy. Not every political responsibility is evidence of an impending financial scandal. Sometimes, a leader is entrusted with a greater responsibility simply because he has demonstrated the capacity to handle it.

Governor Oborevwori’s appointment should therefore be seen for what it is: a vote of confidence in his capacity, judgement and financial discipline. It does not mean that Delta State has been placed at the disposal of a presidential campaign, nor does it make the governor personally responsible for funding one. His role is to provide leadership and oversight within the campaign's financial structure.

As Nigeria’s democracy continues to mature, our political conversations must rise above reflexive cynicism. Public appointments should be assessed on the basis of responsibility, competence and track record, not reduced to conspiracy theories simply because they offer convenient talking points for the opposition.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has been given a significant national responsibility. The appointment is, above all, an acknowledgement that competence inspires trust and that, sometimes, competence is simply recognised and called upon where it is needed most.
