NIGERIA AT 56: THE CHANGE BEGINS WITH THEM

At 56, we pretend we have national heroes, but from the onset, it was a race for cash. Even those who 'fought' for our independence knew that the race was on. They got a headstart. And some of them are now on our Naira notes. Thank goodness, my God, that the N50 note stands as the only honourable note we have in circulation.

Do not let anyone bamboozle you: the Change begins with them. Trouble started with them and not us. For 56 years, we have sat and watched 'them' as their tribe has grown in number and diversity. It was always them, at the top. The man at the bottom -or even in the middle- has learned to survive by doing his own little nefarious bit. But trust me, he will never catch up. The theft from the top is way too much.

Today, Buhari is insistent on working alone at the limit of his very limited and outdated ability, yet he is spending enormous and fantabulous sums on running politics. His Finance Ministry is either comatose or he does not listen to them. So why is that Kemi lady still strutting around Abuja answering to a Ministerial job that she either cannot, will not or will not be allowed to perform? Young lady, I can help draft a letter for you: like how Panadol is the answer to pain.

What is this about selling national assets? And what have Atedo Peterside, Aliko Dangote got to say that will be of any use to us? Do we not know their antecedents? They can talk, they are among those who prepared to buy these assets years ago while the rest of us were toiling honourably. They were fronting for powers that be, selling forex while the ignorant and gullible and sychophantic among us called them whizkids. Whiz maybe, kids not.

There is untold tradition of grand theft in the banking and financial marketplace. What do we expect of the Central bank governor and his bankers? He was one previously. See how they cream off rogue earnings from diabolically managed exchange rate. So there is no President in this country capable of applying simple economic principles that my son can, to deal with this 'arrangee' madness?

'Same few that destroyed Nigeria are now best placed financially to buy up her national assets. What manner of Independence.'

Change starts from the Presidency, from the bloated dishonourable Federal legislature, from errant State governors. From the intellectually bankrupt State Houses of Assembly to clueless Chairmen and Councillors. From APC to PDP. Unless these people and their private sector 'Illicit Billionaire' friends change, nothing is going to change here. We will continue to drift. And drift. And probably sink.
