DELTA STATE'S FINANCIAL STRENGTH IS EVIDENT IN PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT

The recent statement by the New Delta Coalition (NDC), alleging financial mismanagement in Delta State under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is not only misleading but a deliberate attempt to discredit the remarkable strides the administration has made in steering the state toward economic stability and infrastructural transformation.

Contrary to the coalition’s claims, Delta State remains one of Nigeria’s strongest subnational economies, backed by prudent financial management, strategic investments, and responsible governance. The assertion that Delta’s financial strength is overstated ignores the facts on the ground, particularly the government’s ability to meet its obligations while embarking on massive developmental projects.

Delta’s Financial Strength: Facts Speak for Themselves

Chief Fidelis Tilije’s statement regarding Delta’s financial strength is rooted in verifiable realities. The state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) has consistently ranked among the top five in Nigeria, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to economic expansion beyond federal allocations. Furthermore, the claim that Delta is overly dependent on FAAC allocations fails to acknowledge that virtually all Nigerian states, including those the NDC cited as examples, rely significantly on federal revenue inflows.

While GDP figures are often referenced in economic debates, they do not singularly define financial sustainability or economic resilience. What matters is how available resources are utilized for the benefit of the people, and on that front, Governor Oborevwori’s administration has excelled.

Prudent Financial Management and Investments in Development

Under the Oborevwori-led administration, Delta has witnessed an unprecedented focus on infrastructural development, education, and healthcare improvements. Some key achievements include:

Massive road construction and rehabilitation: The government has invested heavily in road infrastructure, linking communities, boosting commerce, and facilitating ease of movement.

Education and human capital development: The administration has allocated significant resources to improve schools, recruit teachers, and ensure Delta’s youth receive quality education.

Healthcare advancements: Delta’s healthcare system has seen remarkable improvements, with new hospitals, medical equipment, and better funding to enhance healthcare delivery.

These investments, combined with ongoing reforms to increase revenue generation and reduce financial waste, indicate responsible governance—not mismanagement.

Addressing the NDC’s Misinformation

The NDC conveniently ignores the economic challenges facing all Nigerian states due to national inflation, exchange rate volatility, and the aftershocks of subsidy removal, which have affected fiscal planning across board. Blaming Delta State’s government for these macroeconomic factors is both unfair and misleading.

Moreover, comparing Delta to other states without acknowledging their differing economic structures and revenue sources is intellectually dishonest. Delta remains a key player in Nigeria’s economy and is actively leveraging its oil-producing status to enhance economic diversification and sustainability.

Oborevwori’s Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

Unlike most administrations that operated with secrecy, Governor Oborevwori has prioritized financial transparency, ensuring that allocations and expenditures are publicly scrutinized. His government is open to constructive criticism but will not entertain baseless allegations meant to mislead the public.

Conclusion: Delta is on the Right Path

Deltans should not be swayed by the propaganda of groups with political motives. The Oborevwori administration remains committed to ensuring that Delta continues to thrive, with a focus on sustainable economic growth, improved living standards, and infrastructural development.

Rather than sowing discord with false narratives, stakeholders should support the government’s efforts to build a stronger, more prosperous Delta State. The facts are clear: Delta is not just financially strong but is making tangible progress under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...

The service featured the introduction of various dignitaries, including Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation who represented President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor Godwin Obaseki, and Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. As each dignitary was introduced, the church remained silent. However, the atmosphere dramatically changed when the name of Former Governor James Ibori was announced; the congregation erupted in wide jubilation and applause. This reaction was so profound that even Senator George Akume and Governor Obaseki could not hide their astonishment. The enthusiastic reception for Chief James Ibori during this solemn occasion highlighted his enduring legacy among the people of Delta State.
