EVEN THE DEAF SEE, THE BLIND HEAR: Oborevwori’s Transformative Impact in Delta!

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's administration, which began on May 29, 2023, has been marked by a series of transformative projects and accomplishments that have significantly impacted Delta State's development across various sectors. In under two years, his leadership has focused on infrastructure expansion, social investment, healthcare improvements, and prudent fiscal management, all of which are reshaping the state's future. His achievements are not mere propaganda but tangible developments that Deltans can see and experience daily.

Infrastructure Development

A cornerstone of Governor Oborevwori's tenure is his extensive focus on infrastructure, particularly in road construction and drainage systems. His administration has embarked on approximately 513 road projects, covering over 1,300 kilometers of roads and 950 kilometers of drainage systems across the state's three senatorial districts. These projects, which include 377 inherited and 136 newly initiated ones, reflect his commitment to enhancing connectivity and accessibility across Delta State.

Some of the most notable flagship projects include the construction of flyover bridges in Warri and Effurun, executed by Julius Berger, and the ongoing development of the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway, with significant progress observed, particularly in the completion of Sector C and the Obo Bridge. Additionally, the 26-kilometer Trans Warri-Ode-Itsekiri Road, comprising 19 bridges, has seen the completion of 15 bridges. This marks a historic milestone that enabled the Olu of Warri to travel by road to Ode-Itsekiri for the first time. Such achievements demonstrate the governor's commitment to modernizing infrastructure and improving transportation networks in the state.

Social Investments and Human Capital Development

Beyond physical infrastructure, Governor Oborevwori's administration has prioritized social investments aimed at empowering citizens and fostering economic growth. His government has expanded the Delta Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) program, increasing its reach from 36,000 beneficiaries to over 250,000. This initiative provides support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and offers assistance to vulnerable populations, including individuals living with disabilities.

The administration has also introduced several economic empowerment initiatives. The MORE-Grant program has benefited over 5,000 women, providing financial assistance for their businesses. Similarly, the MORE Biz-Up initiative has supported 2,000 entrepreneurs, helping them scale their businesses. Furthermore, over 6,000 farmers have received agricultural inputs to boost food production and ensure food security in the state.

Governor Oborevwori's administration has also partnered with the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for African Development (AUDA-NEPAD) and committed N1 billion in counterpart funding to empower 2,000 farmers in poultry, fish farming, and crop cultivation. These investments underscore his administration's commitment to creating sustainable economic opportunities and lifting more people out of poverty.

Healthcare Advancements

Significant strides have also been made in the healthcare sector. Governor Oborevwori's administration is upgrading and re-equipping 150 Primary Health Centres and 64 General Hospitals, ensuring better healthcare delivery across Delta State. Additionally, the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme has seen its enrollees surpass two million, making it the highest-enrolled state health insurance scheme in Nigeria. These efforts have garnered national recognition, with Delta State winning the Bill and Melinda Gates Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge for outstanding performance in primary healthcare management.

To further improve healthcare services, Governor Oborevwori has approved the procurement of eight dialysis machines and CT scans for hospitals across the state. The distribution plan includes:

  • Warri Central Hospital – 3 Dialysis Machines
  • Asaba Specialist Hospital – 3 Dialysis Machines
  • Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara – 2 Dialysis Machines

The machines are expected to arrive by the end of March, along with the CT scans, which will further enhance diagnostic capabilities in the state. Additionally, the surgical theatre at Warri Central Hospital is set for expansion to accommodate more patients and provide better medical services. These strategic investments in healthcare infrastructure demonstrate the administration's dedication to improving the well-being of Deltans.

Budgetary Commitment to Development

Governor Oborevwori's dedication to development is further reflected in his administration's prudent fiscal policies. His 2025 budget allocates 60% to capital expenditure, one of the highest ratios among Nigerian states. A staggering N250 billion has been earmarked for road infrastructure, ensuring that ongoing road projects receive adequate funding for timely completion.

In a move to ensure equitable development, the governor has also allocated N2 billion for road works in each of Delta State’s 25 Local Government Areas. This initiative ensures that both urban and rural communities benefit from infrastructural development, addressing the needs of citizens across the state. His administration’s financial discipline and prioritization of development projects reflect his commitment to fiscal responsibility and sustainable growth.

Conclusion

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's administration has demonstrated a robust commitment to transforming Delta State through comprehensive infrastructure projects, substantial social investments, and strategic budgetary allocations. His focus on road construction, economic empowerment, healthcare improvements, and prudent financial management has positioned Delta State on a path to sustainable development.

Unlike many other state administrations that rely on mere rhetoric, Oborevwori’s achievements are visible and tangible. Deltans can see the impact of his leadership in the roads they drive on, the hospitals they visit, and the economic opportunities being created for businesses and farmers. His administration has set a new standard for governance in Delta State, proving that visionary leadership and strategic planning can lead to meaningful progress and lasting transformation.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...

The service featured the introduction of various dignitaries, including Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation who represented President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor Godwin Obaseki, and Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. As each dignitary was introduced, the church remained silent. However, the atmosphere dramatically changed when the name of Former Governor James Ibori was announced; the congregation erupted in wide jubilation and applause. This reaction was so profound that even Senator George Akume and Governor Obaseki could not hide their astonishment. The enthusiastic reception for Chief James Ibori during this solemn occasion highlighted his enduring legacy among the people of Delta State.
