DELTA 2015: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – SENATOR OKOWA’S MODEL

There is no gainsaying that the development of any State/country or its backwardness is tied to the quality of leadership. Pundits even predict the estimated level of development with the leadership as a yardstick. Therefore, Delta State, one of Nigeria's fastest growing economies cannot afford to handover the State at this period to a man without the technical know-how of the public sector which is the main stay of any viable modern economy. When the people of the State are hollering for such economic and social change,

The world economic crisis according to the United Nation is caused by indecorous planning and research by leaders of countries. To have a successful and sustainable development, there should be a passable forecasting at least focusing on the economy for the next ten to twenty five years.

The only candidate with this brain, this aptitude and job exposure is Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the Delta State assignment. At this critical period where developed countries are going through economic meltdown and drawing up austerity measures, it is therefore imperative for the developing economies to implement economic strategies, which would put them at the fore front and enable their economies to avoid the mistake of the superior economies or the world powers.

The coming of Senator Okowa into governance should be celebrated, for his entrance is messianic to the economy of Delta State. He has stated clearly at every function, that he is not out to lead for self-interest but he is coming into government to redirect the economy of Delta State to proper direction, which will breed higher prosperity.

The prosperity, which Senator Okowa is advocating, is a variety that will enhance the living standard of the average Deltan, guaranteeing them the ability to be self-dependent and self-sufficient . Senator Okowa preaches sustainable development, and that is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Senator Okowa is out to use Delta State mineral resources and agricultural products for poverty eradication, knowing that changing unsustainable and promoting sustainable patterns of consumption and production, protecting and managing the natural resource base of economic and social development, are the overarching objectives of and essential requirements for sustainable development.

Poverty eradication is the greatest universal challenge facing the world today and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. Senator Okowa throughout his campaigns recapped the commitment to freeing Deltans from poverty and hunger as a staple of urgency. He recognized in all his speeches that the people are at the centre of sustainable development and, in this regard, he promised to strive for a world that is just, equitable and inclusive, while remaining committed to working towards promoting sustained and inclusive economic growth, social development and environmental protection that benefits all, particularly the children, youth and future generations without distinction of any kind such as age, sex, disability, culture, race, ethnicity, origin, migratory status, religion, economic or other status.

When Senator Okowa is finally sworn-in as the next governor of Delta State, his sustainable development goals will be accompanied by targets and will be further elaborated through indicators focused on measurable outcomes that are action oriented, global in nature and universally applicable. Senator Okowa's model of development is the better model: improved, efficient and better measures towards achieving measurable results. He deserves the vote of every well-meaning sons and daughters of Delta State.
