THE FACTORS THAT MADE SENATOR IFEANYI OKOWA WIN AND OPPOSITION LOSE

The April 11, 2015 governorship polls decided who the next governor of Delta State would be from May 29, 2015. That has been established. What maybe unknown to many is the reasons the elections were won and lost. From all the indices and projections made by pundits prior to the election, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party was to become the winner of the polls and he won. There are a few reasons for that. First, Delta State is a stronghold of the PDP and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Since the return of democracy in May 1999, Delta State has given over 75% of its votes at every election to the PDP. In the last April 11 Governorship polls, the same feat was replicated by the PDP. PDP is so entrenched across all the wards, State constituencies, federal and senatorial districts of the State to be uprooted so easily. This was also reflected in the number of national and State Assembly members the PDP earned in the polls. The so called ...

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS: ARE THERE CHRISTIANS IN THIS WORLD?

I look at folks around who are Christian; I observe their behaviors and they do not jive with what I garnered should be the behaviors of Christians. Given this perceived contradiction, I ask myself: who is a Christian and are there, in fact, true Christians?  Is a Christian a person who simply states that he is a Christian even if he does not behave as the New Testament part of the Bible said that Christians should behave? There is no doubt whatsoever that Jesus taught love and forgiveness. In the Sermon on the Mount (Mathew, 5: 43-48) he asked his followers to love all people and to forgive their enemies (Mathew 5: 38-42). He said that if a person slaps one of your cheeks you should turn the other cheek for him to slap, too (Mathew, 5:39-40). He said that if a thief asks for your coat you should also give him the entire clothes that you are wearing (Mathew, 5: 40-42). In the only prayer that he taught his followers, the Lord’s Prayer, he told his followers to forgi...

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE: WAYS SOCIAL MEDIA CAN RUIN YOUR MARRIAGE LIFE

Social media is good but when couples live on social media in can harm your relationship and your sex life by giving wrong perception of how your partner is meant to be like.  According to experts, an unhealthy fixation with social media affects how connected you are to your partner in the bedroom. Catherine Donaldson-Evans   from   SheKnows   lists 7 ways social media could make your relationship crumble. 1.     It can make sex feel dull:   If you're getting a lot of your daily excitement from checking Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr, then "real-world" activities like sex might start to lose their sheen and feel boring in comparison. "A 'virtual' relationship can be enticing and stimulating. It's ever-present and you can engage at any time!" says licensed couples therapist Jeanette Raymond, author of Now You Want Me, Now You Don't!. "That makes your sex life feel more like a duty or routine experience." 2.   ...

DELTANS VOTED RIGHT: HOW PEOPLES’ DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) TOOK DELTA STATE

Against the backdrops of election violence and scheming that must have occurred on or before the April 11th Governorship and Houses of Assembly elections in Delta State, the permutation of election’s victory went well for the PDP.  Right from when parties’ primaries were concluded across the country and the opportunity for victory was clear with the adoption of Great Ogboru as Labour party candidate and Otega Emerho as the APC Party’s flag bearer.  With both contesting on Urhobo platform and Uvwiamuge declaration, PDP was so sure of victory which many of the members described as easy and sweet victory. Some mistakes and political miscalculations cost the two opposition parties the most prized seat in the State. So many factors stood against them right from buildup of the elections.   The question is: Why was it so easy for PDP to sweep Delta State? Great Ogboru and Otega Emerho limited their candidacy to ethnic support. The 2015 Governorship elect...

SHAMEFUL DEFECTIONS AND PARTY POLITICS IN NIGERIA

It is most unfortunate that our politicians demonstrate a total lack of ideological leaning on the political parties, which they belong. Most of those who decamped and defected recently after the presidential elections are obviously driven by ulterior motives and intent to use the political parties as mere political platforms to achieve self-seeking and egocentric political relevance. Politicians in Nigeria have reduced political parties to mere electoral and political hustling platforms rather than real political parties, shaped by beliefs and ideologies. There is no doubt that these politicians do not have passion for service. They are definitely not patriotic. They are political jobbers and opportunists whose primary objective is to take undue advantage of every political situation to sustain their selfish political ambitions. They lack principles, integrity and morality. They are indeed stomach politicians. It is very unfortunate that the challenge with our democratic pr...

MEET THE FIVE ARCHITECTS OF JONATHAN’S DEFEAT

Nigerians made history. For the first time in the nation’s democratic history, an incumbent president has been defeated. While incumbent governors have been defeated in the past, it was a feat many thought might not be possible at the centre for a long time to come. But Nigerians, by their votes, have shown the exit door to a government they deemed has not served them right. But the trouncing of Goodluck Jonathan at the polls was not a happenstance. Perhaps, if there were those who did not see this coming, it was probably the president himself and some of his loyalists. Beyond this, however, there are some five key individuals who contributed to the electoral downfall of the president. Their actions and what they represented ensured that in less than two months from now, Jonathan will become a former president. B UHARI: THE ULTIMATE CROWD PULLER Nigerians made history. For the first time in the nation’s democratic history, an incumbent president has been defeated. While incumb...

WARRI: GOVERNOR UDUAGHAN COMMISSIONS EFFURUN FLYOVER

The Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, CON, has commissioned the newly built Effurun flyover in the continued gale of projects commissioning, which is blowing across the State. Only last week the Governor had earlier commissioned another flyover built at the InterBau roundabout in Asaba. The scope of the works in the Effurun flyover included a 120   metre-long six-span bridge, two ramps of about 140 meters each on either approach bringing it to a total of 400 metres long, “the entire bridge/ramps structure is a four-lane dual carriage way, comprising of two in each travel direction demarcated with a New Jersey Barrier.” The rapid growth of the Effurun-Udu-Warri commercial metropolis, including the huge oil and gas industry, maritime activities in our State and neighbouring Niger Delta States in addition to being a major East-West intersection, have greatly impacted on the volume of vehicular traffic on the this roundabout resulting in serious traffic...
