Christmas is celebrated globally as it is a time of reunion, relaxation and restoration. Yet this precious season is at the moment being threatened by the perils of climate change. Christmas dews are disappearing, fewer harmattan days and less affordable food to consume. This year, it’s going to be a ‘Green Christmas’ in Delta State as the 1st Annual Green Hall of Fame debuts in Asaba, the proud capital of Delta State.
Over the years the challenge of securing the integrity of our environment has been a major global concern. From governance to advocacy; environmental communication to conservation; climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as promoting sustainable consumption in production and service, several personalities have laid long lasting foundations and partnerships that is already helping to ensure a green future for Nigeria as a whole.
The Sustainability Consultant at The Green Team Chibuikem Diala in a press statement in Asaba says that “in order to promote inspiration, excellence and sustainably preserve posterity of our environment, The Green Team Africa Initiative and Sustainable Eco6tem Ltd with the endorsement of Delta State Department of Climate Change has created a landmark Green Hall of Fame- a novel initiative to celebrate legends of our environment. The core essence is to ensure that the environmental footprints of our ‘Green Heroes’ are not lost in time. Above all, it offers us an opportunity to provide the next generation the privilege of sharing in the memorable commitments and values of men, women and organizations who helped preserve through policy, advocacy, innovation, etc, the environment they are born into.”
“We are thrilled to announce these national icons who are 2014 Green Hall of Fame inductees including Dr Newton Jibunoh (Desert Warrior) who crossed the Sahara Desert a record 3 times; Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, Executive Governor, Delta State, who is also a very strong green enthusiast having strategically developed programmes, policies and partnerships over that last 7 years in curtailing the perils of global warming. Also, Dr Victor Fodeke, a climate change expert and pioneer Head of Special Climate Change Unit and Nigeria’s DNA will also be inducted as well as Mr Odigha Odigha, the Chairman, Cross River State Forestry Commission. OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
