JOB CREATION REMAINS ONE OF GOVERNOR OKOWA’S TOPMOST PRIORITIES

From the electioneering campaigns into the assumption of office, job creation has remained one of the topmost priorities of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration’s economic agenda.

It is the understanding of the Governor that it is only through job and wealth creation that State government could attain its objectives of improved security and poverty reduction.

He has promised that his administration would give the fullest possible support to all efforts to create more jobs through the reorientation of Deltan youths towards an entrepreneurial mindset. His administration wants to ensure that youths in the State are gainfully engaged in agriculture and industry. To him there is need to seek other ways of diversifying the economy so as to boost revenue.

To the Governor, one of the ways we can achieve this is through the reorientation of our youths towards an entrepreneurial mindset. We must therefore promote and enhance the teaching and learning of entrepreneurial skills in all schools and tertiary institutions, thereby exposing our youths to the basics and rudiments of starting and sustaining their own businesses.

To encourage and assist Deltan youth to move from being job seekers to job creators, his administration has created several job creation programmes. Since coming office, the administration has set up six new schemes to grow the agro-industrial sector of the economy, namely Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurial Programme (YEGEP), Skill Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP), Production and Processing Support Programme (PPSP), Tractorisation, Extension of Microcredit and Agricultural Loans Development of Agro-industries and Online Digital Jobs for 2000 unemployed Deltans.

It is important that the private sector should also do more to support government’s efforts to boost youth entrepreneurship and the development of micro, small and medium scale enterprises in the State.
