SUPREME COURT VERDICT: NO VICTOR NO VANQUISHED

I don’t know what politics is, but I know what politics is not; it is neither science nor art. If politics was conducted as science or art, Otega Emerhor and Great Ogboru would have won, especially when one considers all the deafening noises, the insults, and the entire internet bullying that emanated from their supporters against those who did not support their governorship ambition.

Like every other aspect of life, the campaign to shove the opposition candidates into everyone’s throat is gone for now; it ended Tuesday, when the Supreme Court, at last, confirmed what many of us already knew and were used to saying; that Otega Emerhor and Great Ogboru would not be the governor of Delta State. I said it. Others said it. Unfortunately, it took the Supreme Court to vindicate us.

If opposition candidates had listened to us, who really cared for them, instead of listening to those who were interested in their money, they never would have spent all the money for lawyers and other behind-the-scenes manipulations, all towards his quest to succeed Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan. As of Tuesday, all the spending came to nothing and now they are left holding the basket, full of debtors.

On the surface, it may appear as if Otega Emerhor and Great Ogboru are the losers. On the surface, it may also appear as if Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is the winner. But when one looks beyond the mundane, it becomes apparent that no one lost and no one won. Rather, the entire fiasco ought to be seen in the context of a lesson for the people of Delta State.

Assuming any lesson is learned in the matter of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa versus Otega Emerhor and Great Ogboru, it should be that the people of Delta State have a choice and the right to support any candidate of his or her choice, void of enmity, void of insults, name-callings, and abuse among themselves. No one deserves insult simply because of his or her choice of candidate. No one deserves name-calling and bullying simply because of support for the other candidate. Rather, the spirit of community and brotherhood are what should reign, bearing in mind that no matter our political leanings, our efforts and contributions are geared toward the development of our society.

Now the politics and the legal battle are over---it’s done! Delta State is not a mega country like Russia, India, China, or United States of America. In Delta State, we are all culturally connected, though dialects may differ. It is therefore imperative that we forget all the hard feelings, no matter how biting the wrongs might have been, come together, and join hands to build our great State.

Senator Okowa is the governor; we all know that! But he alone, like a single tree in a forest, is not going to build Delta State. Governor Okowa needs our contributions. Governor Okowa needs our supports. Governor Okowa needs our prayers. United we stand, divided we will fail.

I am appealing for Otega Emerhor and Great Ogboru to get ready to join hands with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to build Delta State. With their wealth of experience, they have so much to offer the State. There are many areas of development that the governor can seek their contributions. Sitting down to mourn the loss of elections is not going to cut it.

OBOREVWORI: How Not To Glorify A 'One Chance' Governor - By Zik Gbemre

It is appalling how, in desperation to sustain its thieving hegemony over the Delta State Government since 1999, the Delta PDP had the audacity to impose the weakest, most uninformed contender, a local champion, as Governor over a state replete with accomplished men and women of immense capacity. Given this unenviable privilege, one would have expected the fortunate placeholder governor, Sheriff Oborevwori—whose only election campaign manifesto was pledging to improve on the failed leadership of Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor—to engage creative minds and individuals of proven integrity to assist him in making a difference. Rather than doing the needful, Oborevwori has worsened matters by electing to engage the same spent leaders, deadwood, and gluttons that have gained prominence in running the state down over successive administrations. The result has been a government of mediocre officeholders competing to run the state for their pockets at the detriment of the populace, under a gove...
